A perfect distraction. Later, I drove to the office, eager to escape the suffocating marriage talk. On the way, I spotted the hotel from where Rohit had bought that cake the other day. The memory of its rich, decadent taste had been haunting me. On impulse, I pulled into the parking lot and headed to the bakery. The moment I stepped inside, my gaze swept over the glass display filled with an array of beautifully crafted pastries and cakes. They looked like edible works of art.

“You and your sweet tooth.” Together, we held the knife, gently slicing through the soft cake, our movements synchronized. The knife slid through the layers of cake like butter, and we placed a thin slice on a plate. The guests clapped and cheered as we fed each other the first bites, the sweet flavor of the cake—plain with just a hint of vanilla and not too sweet, my favorite—mirroring the sweetness of the moment.

“Well, we have tray of sprinkles, fruits, a bowl of edible glitters, and dulce de leche. If you reach across with your left arm, then you’ll find them.” The taste of the dulce de leche made Tiffie to bite her lip. Dulce de leche will be perfect with their cake. She wished that she could mix it with honey and some nuts. Tiffie stretched her left arm across and reached out for the bowl of chocolate. They’re already close to each other. Heat of Bobby’s skin radiated around her that caused her heart pounded fast. It felt a little bit uncomfortable when she could feel her hands shaking. The cake was more important, so she breathed deeply to calm herself down. Then, Tiffie lifted the bowl a bit. C

All of them were decorated in the same style as his aunt’s cakes in his youth. They looked like little brown logs with little imitation plants swirled onto the side in buttercream frosting and marzipan mushrooms sprouting from the cakes’ chocolate tops. Nicholas spun towards Molly in a confused circle. He was struggling to grasp that she had somehow done this for him, that she could be so thoughtful. “Molly, did you do all of this for me?”
