I looked out the window and thought about nothing in particular which was a skill I was relearning after years of not having the luxury. The hotel was small and old and the wifi was genuinely terrible which felt like a promise kept. We dropped our bags and went out immediately because the bookshop closed at seven and I was not going to Edinburgh and miss the bookshop. It was exactly as I remembered. Three floors. Narrow stairs. The smell of old paper hitting you the moment you pushed the door open. Books stacked in ways that suggested a system only the owner understood. A cat asleep on the poetry section. Damien stood just inside the door and looked at all of it.
