Tiffany's hands are covering Stella's eyes from behind. "I really don't understand what's going on" Stella said. "You only have to be patient, and take six steps forward" Tiffany replied, covering her eyes still. "Ok..." Stella took six steps forward. "Climb ten steps" Tiffany said, and Stella did that, gently raising her legs. Yvonne opened the door, and Pascal got the confetti ready. Tiffany uncovered Stella's eyes, and Pascal blew up the confetti...

“But they’re too quiet. I don’t like it.” The word hung in the air. Ryker’s voice, dry and dangerous, broke the hush: “You’re not meant to.” He crossed his arms, shifting weight. “The Hollow don’t do clean strikes. This was a taste. The next one will tear.” Trixie stepped forward, placing both hands on the cold stone. The scroll from the Ridge was rolled open again across the table, held down at one corner by what looked like a claw—blackened, unnatural: a trophy, a threat. She tapped it with a fingertip. “Trisha held. Barely.” Her tone was flat. “The Hollow left one alive to run.”

I tensed, thankful that she turned the intensity down from when Luna Lannie used it. “I want you to secretly pull one out and do what it says. I’ve mixed them up so even we don’t know which one’s you’ll be doing, hence making it into a little game only the three of us know we’re playing.”

By the time I kicked my way out, my knees were bruised and the assembly had already started. Silverfang’s annual ceremony wasn’t something you were late to. Three packs gathered in the massive auditorium, banners hanging from the ceiling, elders seated on velvet chairs. It was where alliances were made, where secrets were traded in smiles. It was also being livestreamed to every member of the tri-pack alliance. And me? I was climbing the back stairs, breathless, trying not to look like I had crawled out of a janitor’s tomb. The balcony was crowded. Students in silk dresses and sharp blazers filled every row. I squeezed through them, clutching the first drink I could grab from a passing tray.
