My vision was all blurry at first but it soon cleared up and I look around. Everyone was gathered around me and Drake and Demiana sighed in relief, clutching their chest as if they had just had a heart attack. There was a hole on my back but I felt it slowly close by itself, healing me completely. The silver bullet that went straight to my heart felt like it was withdrawing on its own back to the hole where it just entered my system. The bullet dropped to the ground and I felt the hole on my back finally close and replaced all the blood I lost moment before this.

With a lump in my throat, I followed the trail down the length of the kitchen counter in the centre of the room up until a point in the corner, between two bottom cabinets. Blood. Lots of it. A freaking pool that had to be enough to count as donation at a blood bank. What the actual hell?! Had that been there before. Oh shit, Adeline. I followed a second trail on the right of the counter, back towards the door and it was at that exact moment my heart sank, dropped to my stomach and promised to never return. The floor was still very much covered with glass shards, but unlike the left, most of the glass pieces were covered with blood, blood I would love to know who the hell it belonged to!

Only now do I see them: they glow faintly—nothing bright, just a heartbeat of red pulsing in sync with mine. One droplet splits in two. Then three. Like it’s birthing itself into the earth. Multiplying. Carving itself into the bones of the stone. I’ve seen blood do a lot of things: run, clot, freeze. But never have I seen it decide. My breath stills. The pulse behind my eyes slows. The floor beneath me doesn’t just feel cold—it feels aware. And the seal inside my chest—the one I thought the priest had cracked open with wolfsbane and scripture—twitches.

There was a small resistance, then a give. Then deeper. It pierced through the intercostal muscle. The sound— Dear goddess. The faint, sickening crunch as the needle pushed through tough muscle tissue was visceral in the otherwise silent operating room. My stomach lurched. But I didn’t stop. I steadied my shaking hand, refusing to let panic take over. Deeper. The needle entered the pericardium; the sac around the heart. Then finally the heart muscle itself. I felt the subtle shift. I knew I was there.

“What are you doing? I said to circulate the essence everywhere in your body. We talked about this!! Which is the easiest way to spread the essence??” “The heart,” I whispered. “Good, take it there.” I followed his instruction, and as I led the glow to my heart, it lighted its own path as it followed the current of the blood in my veins. Once the essence pooled into the second chamber, my heart pumped the essence everywhere and slowly; its red colour turned purple. “Good, now take it to your lungs and exhale…” I did, but unfortunately, I followed the wrong path and rather than exhale, I gagged, and moments later, I threw up blood.

"Either is fine." She opened the door and walked out, her footsteps fading down the corridor until they disappeared. He turned the terminal back on. That line was still there. He reset the font to normal size, and below it her heartbeat curve appeared, unbroken from the moment she woke. He zoomed in and traced its journey: as she walked down the corridor, her heart rate rose from sixty-eight to seventy-two, then at some point she slowed and it fell back to sixty-eight. She was far away.

I felt my body collapse. Vital signs such as breathing, blinking, thinking, froze for what I assumed were a few milliseconds. My lungs released all the air stocked in them, and they only recovered after my oxygen supplies dropped to precarious levels. Immediately after, I felt my heart pumping blood again, slowly yet determinedly. I could feel it moving through my veins and arteries, leaving tickling traces all the way through, and making all its way up to my face until it reached my cheeks. Oh yeah. My cheeks, ladies and gentlemen, were giving themselves quite a feast up there.

And the droplets were my blood. Not thinking twice, I stabbed the syringe right in the middle of my chest, leaning an inch towards the left where my heart would be, and pressed down on the plunger. When I had emptied out the entire tube, I pulled it out and it automatically fell from my hand as I felt my entire body going numb. The ground was cold and sticky and I could feel the stones digging into my back as blood flowed freely. But at this point, the pain no longer registered in my brain.

I trace her down to her toes. The dripping sound I heard is not of water but blood. I look down at the ground. I can’t feel the ceramics. The ground is covered with blood. I hold my breath as I lift my face and look at my surroundings. The corridor is gone. There’s nothing in here just an empty wide place. I get up and realize, I’m standing on a sea of blood.
