When It Gets Dark Novels & Stories

The transition from day to night has become my favorite time of day. When the sky turns a deep, bruised violet and the ocean begins to whisper against the shore, the house feels like it is breathing with us. We have learned to love the darkness, not because it hides us, but because it feels like a heavy, comforting blanket that lets the world outside fade away.

The cold floor sent chills through the soles of my feet as I walked quietly, doing my best not to make a sound. As I reached the bottom of the stairs, I noticed a soft light glowing from the kitchen. Low voices echoed through the hallway, but I couldn't quite make out what they were saying from where I stood. I crept closer, careful with each step, until I was just outside the kitchen door.

The crescent moon shined alone in the lonely dark sky. Stars were hiding behind the clouds floating in the cool night. I was scared not because of what happened but because of what might happen after I reach home. The black screen of my dead phone stared at me as I tried to think about what I would say to my parents. It was late and no matter how much I tried to ask Damien to take me home it was useless. That's how I ended up sitting alone in the empty room that was next to the room in which I went the last time I was here.

Lucas narrows his eyes, he has never hear Douglas speak before. He must really be scared. " It is dangerous to travel in the dark", Tobi replies, he crouches on the ground and traces the dirts with his fingers. " indeed, traveling at night is very dangerous, we travel by day and hide by night", Tarah suggests, she picks the sharpened wood twirling around as her weapon. Lucas leans against the truck, he frown and glances at Emily. Smelling something awful, he glance around, sniffing the air.

I hear the voice shout again. My eyes flutter open in hopes of seeing where the voice is coming from, but everything around me is dark. I've never known dark as this existed. I've lived in the city all my life, so have never been exposed to true darkness. A realization I'm truly only understanding right at this moment. Even at the darkest of nights, there is still some light that manages to protrude. Whether that be from the moon or a streetlight. Light pollution is there. I always considered myself good with the dark. Never requiring the use of night lights or flashlights to make my way across a room at night.
