Then, more quietly, I added, “I haven’t even heard a heartbeat yet.” He closed the laptop gently. “That’ll happen soon.” That word again. Always soon. --- Later that afternoon, I took a stroll around the grounds, sticking close to the path by the rose bushes. A butterfly landed on my arm, and for a fleeting moment, I didn’t dare to move. Its wings, a vibrant mix of orange and black, felt like stained glass dancing softly against my skin.

Alone, sitting. Not that the fairy knew anything else. The time passed, until, on a hot spring day, a butterfly flew through the mountains and glaciers, and as if it were only there for this cause, it lands on the fairy's wrist. The fairy does not react, no movement stands there as it has done for a long time, staring at the blue and black wings of the butterfly. This one stays there for a few moments, spreading its wings as if it were going to stretch, then, suddenly closing it as if it had changed its mind, again flapping its wings and flying through the colossal pillars of ice, disappearing from the castle.

' That random question popped up at Abby's mind at that moment as she watched the kaleidoscope of glowing butterflies making its way down to their barren garden. Yet her astonishment did not just end there. In fact, it was just the beginning, because when Abby finally had a closer look at the 'butterflies' she became even more astounded.

She looked so damn innocent standing there in the soft light filtering through the glass, surrounded by flowers and fluttering wings. One butterfly finally took pity and landed on her arm and her eyes went wide, body freezing like she was fighting not to scream with excitement. Then she turned and saw me and another one landed on her shoulder. “Look!” she whispered, pointing, her voice trembling with joy. I chuckled and stepped inside, the moment I got close, both butterflies flew off. Camille pouted at me, crossing her arms. “You scared them away.” I smirked. “I know a place where the butterflies won’t fly away, a different kind, they stay… if you handle them right.”

Eventually, after a companionable lunch, Gerard packed them all back into the car and directed her to drive the short distance to a small town called Klapmuts and there introduced them to a place Cindy had never known existed. She stood in an enclosed tropical garden and gazed in awe at the hundreds of butterflies that fluttered around her. It was like watching a garden of wildflowers take flight, and Cindy could do nothing but stand and stare, her eyes filling with tears as their wings kissed her face and hair.
