I prop Cree against the wall, his eyes fluttering closed. "Stay with me," I plead, shaking him gently. "We're so close." I search frantically for something to break the window, my eyes stinging from the smoke. A chunk of fallen ceiling debris catches my attention. I snatch it up, ignoring the searing pain as it burns my palm. With all the strength I can muster, I hurl the debris at the window. It cracks but doesn't shatter. I throw it again and again, desperation fueling each attempt. Finally, on the fourth try, the glass gives way, cool night air rushing in.

No answer. I tried the handle. It was locked. That in itself wasn’t strange. What was strange, how Weber, was the cracked bit of gladd in the corner window. It was not shattered so it was not obvious. It just had a clean, thin and curved split across the bottom pane that looked like the result of heat stress. My eyes dropped to the floorboards. There was one scorch mark near the threshold, small and almost shaped like a footprint. And that’s when my stomach sank.

I was only two steps high when I came crashing down, because a box was not steadily placed. I cried out in frustration. "You will leave though this window Isabella" I tried to console myself and got back to work again. This time, I made sure they were steady enough to take my weight. Then I stepped on one box, then the next and the one after, I waited, but nothing happened, so I proceeded until I was right at the window. I observed it is a louvered one, with a flat pane beneath it. Rods lined it horizontally. Dragging the first louver, I pulled it out. It made a squeaking sound, so did the rest three more I pulled out. I piled them on the flat pane.

F*ck, this was f*cking useless! I sat on the floor, brainstorming ideas that could help me. Then I looked at the window again and noticed something strange. The window only had two bars stopping me from getting out but one of the bars was slightly bent. I held this bar and pulled it with all my strength. It shifted and the lintel of the window cracked. That glint of hope made me pull harder and I crashed to the floor again, but this time with an iron bar in my hand and a broken window in my front.

But close enough. The chair near the table had been knocked over and pushed back into place carelessly. The curtains hung unevenly. One side half torn from where someone must have grabbed it too hard. Glass still glittered faintly near the window despite someone’s attempt to clean it. The scent of herbs and something bitter lingered in the air, mixing with the sharp smell of wood and cold night. And the window. Broken. Repaired badly enough that I could still see where it had shattered. I stared at it.

I run my hand along the edges, feeling for any leaks of warm air coming in from outside, and feel nothing. “And this window was replaced.” I turn, looking at Pandora. “It’s not like it’s special magic glass or anything.” I bring my hand down, and my fingers catch on the little gemstone wind chime I have hanging on the window. The chain breaks, and the chime falls into the sink. “Dammit,” I grumble. “I liked hearing this chiming when the window’s open.”

After a few hits, the glass completely shattered, leaving a gaping hole. I looked through it, careful not to cut myself with the shards. The distance to the ground wasn't too bad, nothing I hadn't done before. I grabbed one of the broken glasses and headed to the bed. It wasn't easy to cut and rip the bedsheet and thick duvet with it, but it did the trick. My makeshift rope was ready, I tied it to the window frame and threw it out.

The curtains were wide open, dancing to the tune of the wind. But the window itself was…broken. A trace of blood drips onto the frame. My heart dropped.

This time the glass splintered further. One more hit would shatter it completely. “Move back.” The order came from outside. A second later, a metallic object struck the weakened glass hard enough to send cracks racing violently across the entire surface. I flinched hard. The next hit would break through. Damian forced himself upright again beside me despite the pain clearly tearing through his body now. “You need to crawl into the front seat.” “What?” “There is an emergency release near the driver’s side.” Another hit slammed against the window.
