I've scribbled ideas across three pages already. Spicy ramen. Fire and ice. Sweet and sour. None of them feels right anymore. How do you plate betrayal? How do you season panic attacks? How do you garnish trust that's already been shattered? I bite my lip. Maybe agreeing to the hundred days had been a mistake. Maybe I'd simply been too exhausted to keep fighting. I flip another page, trying to focus on recipes instead of emotions. At least food makes sense. People don't. My phone vibrates on the vanity. I barely glance at it. But it’s enough for me to notice the message on the screen.

He was telling him not to show Zara he's regained his memory and now Zara in an accident? "She didn't plan this one too?" Kauthar rolled her eyes but stood up to go change into something else. That very day happens to be a Sunday and they both don't have work, it should be the day they rest in each other's arms but no, they have no rest since Zara barged into their lives like that.

“The Program gave us the same targets, but only one of us gets to wake up. Adrian only needs to say he loves me more than anyone, and I win.” “What happens to me?” “You stay here,” she said. “Locked away. Forgotten.” She left after that. For the next three days, I counted ceiling panels, footsteps, and the seconds between each check. I could not leave, could not die, and could not even sleep without someone watching. On the third night, the lights flickered. The camera went dark first. Then the hallway dimmed, and the lock on my door clicked open. A man stepped inside in a stolen orderly’s uniform.

With his other hand, he removed some of the white that was around us and had me look. "Take a look Daughter." He urged. "I want you to see something. And do your best to focus." So, I did; I studied it extremely hard. From where we were standing, I saw images flash before me so fast that I had I fell backwards and collapsed on my ass. I saw everything. Elizabeth winning. Olivia, getting away with killing Erin. Kaitlyn dying. Samantha mourning. The twins also equally devastated. Julian and Sophie celebrating. Our world completely changed. Our world, completely unrecognizable.

I spent the next few days in pain, and my energy levels were at an all-time low. Since I hardly checked in with Mom, I only managed to earn a few dollars each day. Nonetheless, Mom didn't seem to care or wonder whether a few dollars were even enough for a student's daily expenses. I suddenly found it all so pointless. After that realization, I began checking in less and less each day. I would survive even with just a dinner roll a day anyway. Whenever I got too hungry, I would drink some water. A dollar could buy me a big bottle that could then last me a week.

The Humanity First riots had largely burned themselves out, the city settling into a tense, exhausted silence. Baraka looked out over the smoldering ruins of his home. He was no longer just the boy who survived the train crash. He was no longer just a specimen on Professor Manji’s operating table. He had broken the Silencer. He had crippled the Iron Lady. He had stood between the innocent and the mob. Patient Zero had finally woken up. He turned to his new army, the violet light returning to his eyes, not as a weapon of destruction, but as a beacon in the dark.

“They thought if they showed me what I could’ve been, what I wasn’t, I’d break.” She looked ahead. “But I don’t want to be perfect anymore. I want to be free.” The console ahead lit up again. Echo swallowed. “Gate Zero… sounds final.” Mira narrowed her eyes. “It’s not the end.” She glanced down at the drive, now humming steadily against her hip. “It’s the real beginning.” End of Chapter Forty-Two

It is the sound of adults discovering the floor is gone and continuing the presentation. Six weeks before Day Zero becomes five. Then four. Maya stops counting aloud. The city starts counting for her. Empty shelves. Longer sirens. More police near hospitals. More closed clinics. More signs saying TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE, which might as well be the national anthem. On a Thursday evening, she drives to the industrial estate. Rain threatens but does not commit. The sky hangs low and grey over the storage rows. She parks between two vans, waits thirty seconds, checks mirrors, checks corners, then unlocks Unit 47.

Three days. To the rest of Oakhaven, three days was just a blink of an eye—a few sunrises, a few sunsets, and the mundane rhythm of a city that never stopped breathing. But for Zara, these three days had felt like three agonizing centuries. Since the disastrous night at the restaurant, the world had turned gray. The vibrant colors of her ambition had been washed away by the rain that had soaked her to the bone that night.
