EIGHTEEN: DETENTION

I knew it, it was everything I expected and worse.

I’d literally be anywhere else.

It was loud and utterly disturbing.

I heard a couple of laughs and then different forms of noises. I looked around to find an unbothered teacher picking a booger from his nose. I couldn't help but notice the stares that followed me. I walked towards an empty seat and then sat down.

“Hey that seat is taken, find somewhere else” A voice said from behind me and I turned around to find a girl, giving me the stink eye. And her said eyes had slits in them. I would have argued but I didn’t like the look in her eye.

“Hey Avery!” I heard someone shout my name and looked to find Jenna flashing me a sly smile

“Jenna” I acknowledged and walked towards her, she pulled out a red lollipop from her lips and nodded towards the empty seat beside her.

I sighed and sat down on the seat, immediately Jenna pulled her chair towards me, making a loud squeaking sound that made the unbothered teacher look up at her.

“What has the precious princess done to get detention?” Jenna asked rather sarcastically and I turned to face her, she plops her two hands under her chin and smiled at me blinking her eyes.

I want to ignore her but decide against it. “I came late,” I shrugged.

“Teacher's pet came late to his class?” I heard another voice from behind me and before I knew it four other girls gathered around me all with curious eyes.

“What’s going on?” I asked Jenna

Jenna slouches back into her chair, her smile still intact, “Nothing actually, we were just wondering what you have with Mr Alistair.

“I have nothing with him” I immediately replied, I wanted to die down the rumours.

I heard a loud groan from one of the girls and another rolled her eyes.

“We’re not dumb newbie, we’ve seen you” One of the girls said.

“The fact that you’re just coming and already hitting on the hottest teacher” Another girl gives me a sly smile.

“So have you guys gone down and dirty yet” This question comes from Jenna and I stared at her wide eyed.

“Too much?” She asked with a smile

“He was simply tutoring me, I was behind my classes and no one wanted to, he was just being nice” I sighed.

“So nothing happened?” One of the girls asked, looking rather disappointed.

“Nothing happened,” I confirmed.

“Does this mean Mr Alistair has a different taste?” Jenna asked with quizzical eyebrows.

“I mean he has rejected every girl that offered herself” Another girl confirmed.

“I heard that since he lost his mate, he’s been with no one else” One girl said.

“That’s so sad”

“What do you mean lost his mate?” I was confused.

They stared at me for a while and sighed.

“He was an alpha, his mate chose someone else” Jenna shrugged, finally crushing the lollipop in her mouth.

I didn’t know much about werewolves but I had read enough books to know that a mate meant the same as one's soulmate and having your soulmate choose someone else must have been painful.

“I never knew,” I replied.

“You couldn’t have,” another girl replied.

“So Ava, you’ve been getting quite the attention” One of them said to me with a smile.

“It’s Avery, not Ava” I corrected and she rolled her eyes.

I couldn’t help but realise these girls just came to interrogate me, probably to gossip about it later.

“Cillian, your roommate’s ex?” One chuckled “You’re devious” . I like it.

“Also the handsome weather boy pushed you into a pool?”

“Raphael doesn’t give a damn about her just finds her easy to bully” Jenna shrugged but I noticed her smile was gone

“I have nothing to do with any of them, probably just cause I’m new” I replied. The last thing I needed was to be popular, my heart still ached for Daphne.

“That’s certain” Another girl scoffed “You’re pretty average Ava” The same girl got my name wrong again.

“It’s Avery, get it right” I said assertively and I noticed her face sour.

“Do you know who you’re talking to, watch it newbie” The girl threatens me and gets up from her chair, her eyes showing slits as she glares at me.

I felt scared, but her disrespect was getting annoying.

“Calm down Marie” Jenna warned and Marie hisses at me.

“You’re so lucky you survived that night” Marie said not once pulling away from looking at me.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Thank you for your time Avery, you can sit somewhere else now” Jenna dismisses me, I glare at her in annoyance and walk away from her chair to another empty seat far away from her and her friends.

As I sat on the chair, I couldn’t help but think of what the last girl was talking about, surviving that night.

What night was she talking about? Had she purposely tried to harm me before.

As I thought, chills ran through my body as I remembered the night Ember saved me from some strange people that I’m sure were trying to kill me, that girl was one of them. I decided to not turn back to look at them.

The door flew open and another person walked in, I look up and see Lucian standing there, one arm of his bag being hung and the other left to fly around

a strong amazing cologne smell filled the entire room and his eyes met mine.

He looked unbothered and looked away almost immediately. The nonchalant teacher has a confused look on his face.

“Why are you in detention?” The man asked.

“I was rude to a person” He replied and the teacher looked even more confused.

“But you’re so well behaved, who sent you here, there must have been some form of mistake” The teacher said loudly and stood up from his chair.

“I will go see the headmistress about this, you and your sister have never been to detention, this is absurd!” The man seemed rather enthusiastic.

“Boot kisser!” Jenna yelled at the teacher who frowned deeply.

“Just wait for a bit Lucian, I’ll make sure your detention is revoked” The man declared and rushed out of the class.
