When I opened my eyes again, I was back at the estate.

My hand went instinctively to my stomach. The life that had been there was gone.

I blinked, and tears fell in silence.

A maid noticed I was awake and rushed out, beaming. "She's awake! I'll go get the Don!"

I murmured his name. "Enzo Bianchi..."

One last look at him. A final goodbye, and then I'd let go for good.

The door swung open, revealing another face I knew all too well.

"Sophia? What are you doing here?"

My sister wore a look of concern, shifting uncomfortably. "Enzo's still handling a deal at the docks. He really couldn't make it back, so he asked me to tell you he's sorry."

I turned away. I wanted to laugh, but nothing came out.

My husband couldn't come see me, and he'd sent another woman to apologize on his behalf.

"It's fine."

My voice came out rough.

Since I had already decided to leave, it didn't matter whether I saw him one last time or not.

Sophia took my hand. "Are you still upset with me?"

She lowered her head, guilt written across her face. "I don't understand why Enzo chose to save me instead of coming for you."

"At least the rescue team got there in time and you're safe. Otherwise I would've blamed Enzo for the rest of my life."

I placed my hand over hers. "Who he saves is his decision. I'd never blame you for that. Besides, he was never obligated to choose me."

Even as I said it, my chest tightened.

Sophia smiled. "I'm glad you see it that way. You just had a miscarriage, so please take care of yourself. Don't overthink things."

My face went pale. "The baby's really gone?"

Sophia was quiet for a moment, then nodded. "If I'd known you were pregnant, I would have made Enzo get you out first, no matter what."

I lowered my eyes. Even if Enzo had known, it would only have added a few more minutes of hesitation. The outcome wouldn't have changed.

I looked at my sister. Even though Enzo had feelings for her, Sophia hadn't betrayed me.

She was the only person I could still trust.

I gripped her hand. "I want a divorce."

Sophia froze, her eyes flickering with complicated emotions. "Are you sure you can let him go?"

I let out a bitter laugh and touched my stomach. "What's left to hold on to?"

Sophia squeezed my hand and gave me an encouraging smile. "Whatever you decide, I'll support you."

"Don't worry, I'll help you put together the divorce papers and take some of the burden off you."

She paused. "The only thing is the baby. I'm worried that if Enzo finds out, he might blame you for not taking better care of the child. If he decides to retaliate, the divorce could get ugly."

My eyes stung as I listened.

Three years of marriage, and Enzo and I still hadn't conceived.

When I finally discovered I was pregnant and wanted to share the good news with him, Sophia came back.

After that, he was out early and home late. Some nights he didn't come home at all.

I never even got the chance to tell him in person.

Maybe I had always been the only one who cared about this baby.

I spoke carefully. "Enzo never knew I was pregnant. Since that's the case, there's no need to tell him about the miscarriage either."

Sophia smiled. "I was thinking the same thing. I've already spoken to the doctor. He won't let word get out."

I paused, caught off guard. I hadn't expected Enzo to give Sophia so much authority that she could command the estate's private physician.

But I'd already made up my mind to leave, so I let it go.

Sophia helped me lie down. "Just rest for now. I'll deliver the divorce papers to Enzo myself."

"Don't worry. With me there to talk him into it, you'll get what you want."

I suddenly called after her. "Sophia, can you hear Enzo's thoughts?"

She stiffened, and a smile flickered at the corner of her mouth before she forced it down.

She didn't answer me directly. "What made you bring that up? I should remind you, this isn't something we talk about freely. Tell an outsider, and you'll bring the family curse down on yourself."

Watching her rush to change the subject, I already had my answer.

She could hear Enzo's thoughts.
