Behind Her Novels & Stories

She walked past him and out the door, her back as straight as a razor. She didn't look back, and she didn't hesitate. She knew exactly what was coming next.

I move towards the back door once she’s out of sight. I know Maxwell is right behind me because the hairs on my neck are standing up. “What the hell was that all about?”

Just a bit further and she would have the advantage for escape. The horse’s heavy hoofbeats thundered behind her, but this time she kept her eyes fixed on the forest ahead. She was nearly there. Louder still they grew. Just twenty more paces. They were right behind her now and she could hear the swinging mace approaching for a deadly hit.

The whole scene felt like it was a slow-motion shot from a movie. Except this time, I wasn't in the audience, but one of the unsuspecting protagonists. It was possible that Hansen's surprising look at that moment was what made Landon pull me behind him. But Hansen remained incredibly calm. Just like when we were madly in love, he called out my name gently, "Christine." I stood still. The music in the background played on. Yet, for some reason, there was a slight ache in my heart. Perhaps I was grieving for the Christine who had overheard the conversation that night.

Only the space where the answer should be. Then Haven speaks again. Soft. Certain. “She’s not in the front, Mama.” Iris turns slightly, scanning instinctively, even before the words finish. “She never was.” A cold feeling slides down Iris’s spine. Haven’s voice drops to almost a whisper. “She’s behind you.”

What the hell! It means she was the one behind it, but how is she able to do this when she hasn’t moved from her spot or turned to look at the guest?

Sideways, as though crossing a doorway required keeping one part of herself turned toward escape until the room proved, inch by inch, that it would not close behind her differently than promised. The back door opened to Omar first, then the woman from the transport board, then finally the child. M.M. stepped inside without stepping fully inside, her left shoulder still angled toward the dark drive beyond. One small duffel hung from her hand. The other hand remained pressed against the tied strip of cloth at her wrist, checking it every few seconds as though the knot itself might disappear if she stopped paying attention.

Maybe the sound of the waterfall was too huge for her not letting her to hear me out. I walked ahead towards her and pulled her towards me. “Belle! What are you doing over here?” I shook her but she didn’t speak. She was constantly looking behind me with the pitiful expression on her face. “What’s wrong? What happened?” I asked her but there was no answer from her. She was making me more and more of scared right now. She constantly looked behind me that I had to look behind me. “We’re caught,” she said as I turned to them.

She could see the excitement in his eyes. That prompted her to leave the room and sprint down the hallway. She had to leave these beasts behind. "Run, Lily, run!" She burst into tears. “Ten… Nine… Eight…” She would definitely suffer if they caught her. She was certain that she was in danger, especially in light of the fact that Kenneth's companions were obviously not in their right minds. Perhaps they were under the influence of drugs.

Her brows furrowed and she bit her lower lips as if she had something going on in her mind. "Why are you standing behind me" managed to say after a minute of conscience trial. "Nothing" she responded nonchalantly. "I wanted to get my comb from the drawer" She pointed to the chest of drawers behind me. "Oh, your comb," I said as I turned to look. "Can you excuse me" she narrowed her brows gesturing me to move aside. "Sure" I replied stepping aside for her to pass. "Maybe she didn't hear anything," I thought inside me. But my mind wasn't still at rest.
