"Hi." I put down the book I was reading and looked up at the owner of that voice. I was secretly shocked to see in front of me the madness of the women all over our campus. He sat in the vacant seat in front of me then handed me a long-stemmed rose. "Uh, for you..." The women at another table started whispering again. The canteen was filled with whispering noises. "What did Wright see in that woman? I'm better than her, ah."

He lifted the compass gently from its velvet bed. The needle trembled. Turned. Settled. North. Always north. He examined the brass casing. "There are scratches." Mara stepped closer. "Where?" He angled it beneath the light. Along the back, faint marks interrupted the polished surface. Not accidental. Intentional. Tiny. Almost invisible. Edwin accepted the compass carefully. His thumb brushed across the scratches. "They're letters." Mara immediately produced a magnifying lens from her bag. Nobody questioned why she happened to have one.

With one last look at the two of them huddled on a thread bare sofa I made my way down the stairs. “Okay, we're listening, what you got?” Jakes voice sounded over the com's as I reached the fourth landing. “One of the guys has been working with some chemical expert of some kind and they have created a bomb. Well sort of, I can't explain it too well, most of it went in one ear and out the other but essentially it will work like a grenade only it should burn itself out in seconds, so no lasting damage.” “What do you mean should?” Bubble questioned sceptically.

The title page and table of contents looks normal, but I keep flipping pages to get to chapter one. Two more pages and I’m staring at the first chapter, titled “Finding a Companion.” I almost missed the title completely because my eyes were drawn to the center of the page where there was a rectangular shaped wooden box. All the pages had been cut through the center to fit this box inside, and there was something carved into the box. It was an image of the compass rose and the words “You’re My True North.” I glance back up to the first sentence of the chapter and it reads, “When preparing for an adventure, the first, and possibly most important, decision is who you will choose as your comp

“By remembering what you were before it started.” She tried but her thoughts were fog. Names, faces, places all scattered fragments slipping through light. “I don’t know who I was.” The dark reached the number 12 A. One more door, then hers. “Then learn,” he said, voice breaking for the first time. “You have seconds.” He pressed something into her hand: cold, smooth metal the compass. Its white glow flickered, then turned red again. “When it beats,” he said, “follow it inward, not out.”

Most of the patterns were foreign to him, but there was one spiral pattern in the center that felt intensely familiar. He picked up the compass fragment, the cold of the metal seeping into his skin. He turned it over and over, his mind working furiously, trying to remember where he had seen that pattern before. Then, a memory surfaced. A thick, star-leather-bound tome he had often read in the library of one of his masters. Rayden frowned, his murmur breaking the silence of the vast warehouse, his voice filled with a mixture of disbelief and a dawning, unexpected excitement.

It was wrapped in plain paper, taped haphazardly, with no label or return address—just a faint smudge of ink where something had been scribbled and erased. “Here it is,” she said, her silver eyes wary but polite, handing it over with a tentative smile. “Weird thing. It felt heavy, like it had rocks inside.” The compass in my other hand vibrated suddenly, its needle going haywire, spinning in frantic circles like a dervish caught in a storm.

My Grandma died some few years ago but not after telling me everything I have to know, not after leaving a great burden on my shoulders. It was after her death that I decided to relocate. Thea tried all her best to let me stay but I told her I had to leave for my own good. I know that it is bad and very coward of me to always relocate when I am betrayed. So… I can figure out the general direction we should be traveling from that and then navigate toward the mountain when we get closer. It’s not much, but it’ll have to do. Without the mind-link, it’s hard for me to give orders. I think everyone has figured out by now that it’s not working. I signal for them to follow me. Brendan puts the book back in his backpack, shifts, and scoops it up. I make sure he has it securely. The last thing I need is to lose the damn book. The irony that we are using a book that was supposed to be completely destroyed isn’t lost on me.
