He leaned me forward, his arm pressing firmly across my stomach as he forced me to cough, to push out the bone.
The pressure hurt, but I barely noticed. I was too focused on the pain in my throat and the desperate need to breathe. And then, finally, the bone dislodged, scraping its way up as I coughed and gagged, blood now spotting my lips. The bone fell onto the table, red-streaked, and I collapsed back in my chair, my throat throbbing with every shaky breath.
I tried to catch my breath, but instead, a fit of coughing overtook me, deep and raw, each cough bringing up more blood. I could see it on the back of my hand, staining my fingers, and I felt my head start to spin.
