Lily scoots closer and leans against my arm. “Tell me a story.” “What kind of story?” “Prince and Princess.” I pause for a moment to think. “Once upon a time, there was a prince who lived in the huge castle. He was strong and brave, but he was lonely.” Lily listens, her eyes wide and attentive. “One day, he found a Princes in the rain. She was lost and scared, and he brought her home. They fell in love and then—” Lily interrupt “That’s like you and that Scary Eyebrow Man?”

He sat at the island. The bread proved. The kitchen was warm. The six sentences were in his pocket, and they were right, and in six weeks he would say them out loud. He couldn't wait. ---

Fiona shoved Ryker in, and I trailed after them. Six years had passed. So much had changed. The sea of roses at the villa entrance had long been torn out. Most of the furnishings inside had been replaced, and everything now belonged to Ryker. There wasn’t a single trace of me left in the entire house. "Fiona, if he never shows up, maybe don’t make things harder on yourself." "No!" Fiona cut him off immediately. "This is what Xavier owes you! Why should he get to hide in there for six years while you ended up crippled?! Xavier will spend the rest of his life making this up to you!"

Just a fact delivered to a man who needed it and was not owed it. I was thinking about Noah Carter. Six years old. Feeding pigeons. Keeping notebooks. Never knowing my name. I was thinking about four pages written at two in the morning that I had read three times since and that sat in my phone like something that had weight, like something that took up actual space. If I'm not mistaken, 'I love ice cream' are the only words he can say. "Of course, I love ice cream. Who doesn't love ice cream?" I said. "Goodnight, Bear." I sighed and caged him to my arms. He's fluffy so he's indeed huggable. I proceed to count sheep, it will help me sleep, it should. That's what my Mama said. Just thinking of her is enough to make my eyes water and as usual, it streamed down from my cheeks and it settled down to my pillows. My hand twitches as I urge myself not to sob. Thankfully, it stopped. Four sheep. Five sheep. Six sheep. Seven sheep. I feel my eyelids got heavy and in no time, darkness eat my mind.

“Hi, um, yes, I’m here to work on a project for school with Axle.” “Oh! Yes, of course. Come on in,” She says cheerily as she opens the door wider. She closes the door behind me and says, “I’m Irene, Axle’s mom. And you are?” “I’m Six. It’s nice to meet you.” “It’s nice to meet you too. What project are you working on again?” “Uh, English Lit. We’re writing a report on 1984 by George Orwell.” Before she can answer, Axle runs down the stairs in a pair of grey sweatpants and a white
