Something turned the corner and nearly ran into us. If we hadn’t flattened ourselves against the shelf, we’d have been caught. When I think of Librarian’s, I couldn’t help but picture my mom. Rounded glasses and flared skirts, nametags and rolling carts full of returned books. She worked at the public library for years now. She’d adore the wide array of books here, though I don’t think she’d like the constant threat of danger.

She was Jessica's good friend, Adeline. Seeing that Grace was an unfamiliar face, Adeline began giving a short introduction. "We have a wide range of books available in our store. If you can't find the book that you want, tell me the title, and I'll help you check on the computer."

She walked out of the building and headed toward the book store, certain they would find Ellie inside, the rest of the party following behind. Amanda and Ellie had gone to the bookstore. It was nice to have a friend who loved books as much as you did. They could stay in the library for hours, not needing to talk, just staring at the books, reading in companionable silence. Lucas watched with a sense of contentment as his two closest friends got along so effortlessly. As they wandered into a quaint bookstore, Lucas couldn't help but smile. This was his territory, a place where he felt most at home. He watched as Hannah's eyes lit up upon entering the shop, her fingers tracing the spines of the books lining the shelves. It was then that Lucas realized just how much he had in common with both Isabella and Hannah – their shared love for literature. "Wow, Lucas, this is your kind of place, isn't it?" Isabella remarked, her eyes scanning the shelves.

Maybe our connection wasn’t meant to be, so no matter how we were brought together we still didn’t end up together. A few moments later, I’d found the books I wanted to buy. I placed them in my arms, then walked over to Kevin, who was sitting on the reading sofa. This bookstore has a tiny reading room with only two reading sofas separated by a small round table. A reading lamp stands beside each sofa. On the table sits a small flowerpot serving as decoration. The reading room floor is carpeted, and next to my sofa are two vending machines.

It felt so good I could have cried. Two years ago, when I worked in that tiny bookstore, Thelma used to come in almost every week. At first I thought she just liked books, but later I found out she mostly liked talking. She would buy one novel and gist with me for thirty minutes straight. Somehow, we became friends from there. Not best friends, because life got in the way, but the kind of friend you remember warmly. The kind that made hard days less ugly. And now she was here. In this house.

The Bookstore The store was small, wedged between a coffee shop and a used clothing store, a hand-painted sign swinging in the breeze. Crossroads Books. I stood across the street for a long time, watching. "He doesn't know you're coming," Adam said. "I know." "If you're not ready" "I'll never be ready." I crossed the street. Opened the door. The bell chimed. The store smelled like paper and dust and something else coffee, maybe, or the candles burning on the counter. Shelves lined every wall. Stacks of books covered the floor.
