Every hair on my neck stood. It was darker than I expected. Low lanterns flickered like tired fireflies — not nearly enough. You’d think a library would want you to actually 'see' what you’re reading. Behind the front desk sat… a bald-headed, shrewd-looking goblin. Ah. That explained the lighting. A quick sweep of the room caught sight of more goblins perched on long, creaking ladders, shelving books twice their height with the grim efficiency of undertakers arranging coffins.

It was supposed to be used only in the day time by special students who couldn’t use the public library for a valid reason. When Anthony started visiting the mini library at night, he used to tip the librarian. But very soon, there was no need to do so because, they were the same. Anthony usually went to the mini library to read supernatural books–especially, books about werewolves. He held his textbook closely so that whenever anyone came close, he would quickly replace it. Not like anyone would suspect him to be a werewolf just because he was reading such books but, he was scared. The day the librarian caught him, he began to stammer.

A librarian with round glasses was smiling at me from behind the cart. “Oh um, just… research,” I said, closing the book halfway. “Research on what?” she asked, tilting her head. I hesitated, then blurted, “Werewolves. Legends. Anything… like that.” Her brows lifted slightly. “That’s a rare request.” She pushed the cart closer. “We have an occult and folklore section. Row D, far corner. But remember, most of it’s myth.” “Thanks,” I murmured, gathering my things.

I walked through the palace on instinct, each step heavier than the last until I reached the library. The scent of old parchment and candle wax clung to the air. Shelves stretched up to the ceiling, crammed with books most people had long forgotten. I scanned the rows, grabbing anything with even a mention of curses, or ancient rituals. My arms filled with books, but none of it felt like enough. “Alpha Rowan?” I turned to see the librarian, her face lined with age, but her eyes sharp and curious. “Do you need assistance?” “I need books on moonstones,” I said, voice rough. “Anything you have.”

Just how many people are curious enough about vampires that they read about it, watch shows about it, and could determine that I belong to that kind just by one look at me? There was a tap on my shoulder. “Miss, I will be closing the library soon. Better collect your things and go home”. Oh, it was the librarian. I gave her a nod and started putting the books that I borrowed back on the shelves, hiding the one about vampires in my chest in the process. *

From my emotions and feelings towards her, I was still like a reader reading the book with the b*tch butting into the story. I walk my way where I could find total silence, the library. There were no students around and only the librarian is there. I step inside and I was overwhelmed with silence, this is what I want, peace. I move my feet slowly, looking at the book, trying to grab a masterpiece. There were thick and thin books. I look at the story titles one-by-one. I went to the fantasy section. I say sheepishly, wishing he’d stop talking “And that the Bishop of Greten himself confirmed your soulmate marks— “Oh, look!” I point at the high doors at the end of the stairs “Looks like we’re here!” I hurry down the stairs, and towards the dark metallic doors that look like the entrence of a cellar. All the uneasy feelings about my lesson earlier are forgotten in the wake of awe and curiously. I touch the heavy lock on the doors. The key hole is tiny. “This is the Underground Library, Lady Sigmond.” The guard tells me, coming to stand by my side “It’s a trove of forbidden knowledge, meant to be locked away from preying hands and eyes.”

She’d felt a bit creepy walking through this huge empty structure, the only one in the building, but had put it out of her mind as she’d hurried up the steps, her shoes clicking as she went, and quickly lost herself in the stacks. Luckily her library had a reputation for its vast collection of rare volumes, which is what had lured her to accept a job here. They also had a constant traveling exhibit, books on loan from other universities and collections; as fate would have it, October was “Occult Month,” and they had several additional volumes on loan that they normally didn’t—some of the rarest in the world, in fact.
