The rain had eased to a cold, persistent drizzle by the time they reached **Grid Echo-Seven**. It wasn't a grid reference so much as a scar on the landscape: a collapsed mining adit half-hidden by scree and skeletal pines, deep in the lee of the mountains overshadowing Dominic’s Aerie. I heaved myself up, and placed my leg on a clump of grass, then shot a hand to grab another, scaling two inches in all my effort. The pain from falling over the waterfall was still there, and now falling from here would be an even greater pain. By the time the pain came, I would be too dead to feel.

Pushed by the mysterious force, they continued to walk up the stairway until they were approximately a hundred meters above the ground. Xyla began to feel wobbly in her knees as she was afraid of heights. Her palms turned clammy with sweat. Stanley tightened his grip on her hand when he belatedly realized how she felt.
