“You don’t get to decide what she is,” Jonah answered, steady. “You never did.”
Hands moved then—fast, ugly, human. Barry shoved. It was not a cinematic shove. It was small, clumsy, a frustration translated into motion. Jonah’s shoulder knocked the book from his hands; it hit the floor and rolled, pages fanning like a slain thing.
“You don’t touch her,” Jonah said, and he said it as if he’d been practicing for months.
Barry’s face split with fury. “You’re gonna pay for this insolence,” he spat. He lunged.
