Kael shouted. The creature lunged, and the clearing erupted into chaos. Steel clashed, magic flared—Kael’s blade igniting with golden fire, Dain moving in a deadly dance of precision. Elara ducked, slashed, felt her dagger strike something thick and unnatural. The creature shrieked, staggered, and vanished into mist. “What the hell was that?” she gasped. Dain’s face was pale. “A shadowbound.” “That’s impossible,” Kael said, eyes narrowing. “They were destroyed in the Siege of Velrin.”

Any more weight on those twigs, and all his magicians would be left without wands again. Reluctantly, the hobgoblin told them to use his reinforced barbed club. Metal was tougher than stone, and it did the trick. “Gogobogo,” the hobgoblin grunted as he crawled into the dark cave that smelled stale. The place was truly abandoned for a long time. Weaving a spell of fire, the shamans used their bent wands as torches and led the way, unaware of the stealthy footsteps at the cave entrance.

Adam stepped back immediately. Arnel raised his hands. Cowards. My fist was still raised, ready to land another blow. Gabriel walked toward me slowly, eyes burning holes into mine. “Well,” he muttered. “This looks convenient.” Two guards grabbed me. I shoved one off. Bad decision. I seemed to be making a lot of those lately. Gabriel didn’t hesitate. His baton came down across my shoulder. Pain exploded down my arm. “On. The. Fucking. Ground. Prescott. Now.”

Marrock looked around before starting the ignition of the car and in a twinkle of an eye, we were already on the tarred road. How? I asked, looking around. "Well, to fill in your curiosity, I used my powers as the Lycan King to get us out of the forest immediately before the rogues and spiritual beings started coming for us," Marrock said. "Why? The other day, you drove the car gently till we got outside," I asked. "Well, today is different. The rogues and spiritual beings of the forest are outside already by that time, so it's better to use my powers rather than for them to catch up with us," Marrock replied.

Golden arrows slowly emerged, timidly trying to chase away the shadows of the night. The great fire disc made its appearance. First, it emerged as a red line growing wider and wider until it rose victorious into the angelic blue sky, ready to stretch its arms over the whole earth. Morwen turned. “You’re late.” The Shadow didn’t move. Then he spoke. “I’m done.” My heart jumped immediately. That voice. It was familiar, very familiar but a bit too deep and Twisted. “I’ve played my part,” the Shadow said. “Dropped notes. Stole hair. fed you with all the information you needed and even threatened her.But she’s not breaking at all. Instead she’s hardening. And I’m tired of pretending to hate her.”

When they crested a low ridge, the view opened—the enemy camp stretched across the white plain like a stain, banners snapping in the wind. It was worse than Eolan expected. Rows of siege engines stood ready, but it was the other shapes—covered wagons with iron-bound doors—that made his stomach knot. The heir’s jaw tightened. “Do you know what those are?” He shook his head. “Shadow cages,” she said grimly. “The Creed uses them to hold creatures they’ve bound in blood-oaths. They mean to match your darkness with something of their own.” Eolan stared at the wagons, the cold cutting deeper than the wind. “Then we can’t just hold the walls. We need to strike first.”
