Tried not to look like I was shaking. Everyone went around and said their names, why they were here. One girl had PTSD. One guy said he’d been to juvie and was trying to get his life right. A woman said her mom died and she couldn’t leave her apartment for three months. Then this guy spoke. Derek. He looked wrecked. There were bags under his eyes, like maybe sleep hadn’t happened for a while. He cleared his throat. “I’m Derek.” His voice was too low at first. “My mom, dad, and sister died in a car accident. I was in it too. I made it out.”

Amidst this moment, a contemplative thought arose: Just another ordinary day, he mused. .........… Derek cautiously peeked his head out, having just punched in the access code for the upscale apartment. He then gingerly swung open the door and slipped inside, his movements marked by stealth to elude the awareness of the apartment's owner. His scheme unfolded thus: on this particular morning, he intended to deliver a grand birthday surprise to Verssa, a mischievous grin gracing his features. Reasonably, Vers was likely still slumbering, making it the opportune moment for Derek to venture into the room and spring the surprise.

She had been trapped in a toxic marriage with Derek, and some things are better left unsaid. Oh—and by the way, Derek wasn’t dead. Christian told me that about a year ago. He couldn’t kill him… he kept thinking about me. Instead, he gave him a second chance. And all this time neither Paula nor Maggie knew. I’ve spoken to Derek on occasion. He’s in India now, living a new life, and he always asks about Maggie and his son. “So… there’s another thing I called you here for,” she said. I nodded. We all settle in and watch the show while eating our dinner. This may be the last chance we get to have some relaxation. I have a feeling something bad is coming.

It was the kind of job every teen detested and Derek should be sulking about the fact that he got selected for the duty…not smiling about it. “It’s the day you find your mate!” Derek’s smile only got bigger. “But we already know who it is, right? You guys probably already feel the mating bond.” Sarah shifted in her seat uncomfortable, her brows furrowed as she turned to look at me. Her eyes held the same question that was already on my mind. ‘What was Derek up to now?’ “You seem overly excited about it,” Alex commented from beside me, putting down his game console as he looked up at Derek through his glasses. “Considering it isn’t even your birthday.”

“What about you? Where do you live?” Derek took a sip of wine. “I’ve got a small house here in the pack. Close enough to the clinic but far enough from the main house to have peace and quiet.” She arched a brow. “You don’t want to live at the big house?” “God, no,” he said, laughing softly. “That place is chaos. Always has been. And now with Celeste moving in? No thanks.” Ryleigh smirked. “Smart man.” He leaned an elbow on the table, his wine glass resting in his hand. “I also keep a condo in the city. I work at the hospital there a few times a month, fill in when they need a specialist. It keeps my human credentials active.”

Derek spoke, "We have been on a livestream the whole time. Every punch, every kick, every pathetic scream I had let out, the whole city had just watched it and they now know the monsters that were going to murder me and my Gabriel in cold blood." The next few hours were just a haze of beeping monitors, antiseptic smell, and the kind of pain that makes your vision swim. I was in a hospital bed. Derek was in the one right next to mine. He looked like he had been dragged behind a car, but he was awake, staring at the ceiling, looking weirdly content. Mr. Miller showed up around midnight.
