Elara looked at her own chest, where the contract resided. She felt the violet light beginning to seep out of the scars on her arms. She realized what she had to do. The contract wasn't just a piece of paper; it was a set of instructions. And she was the only one who could rewrite them.
"Vane," she said, her voice turning eerily calm. "I need you to hold him. Not fight him. Just hold him still."
Vane looked at her, seeing the resolve in her eyes. He knew that look. It was the look of a sacrifice. "Elara, whatever you're thinking—don't. There has to be another way."
