I need to get her alone and get these answers out of her as soon as possible. I force my legs to run faster, adrenaline running through my veins because of these unforeseen events. I feel the wind whipping through my fur, my paws feeling the soft mulch on the earth, the sensation of my tail swishing back and forth as I switch sides and take some sharp turns, the different catcalls of nature, and the scent of the woods all around me. Usually, I would have loved this run. It is a particularly lovely day and in different circumstances, this run would have helped me cool down. My blood runs cold. Shit.

Run your race. The finish line rushed closer with every stride. My lungs burned. My thighs screamed. Sweat slipped down my spine. But I pushed harder. Faster. Stronger. Just a few more steps. Just a little more— “Bailey! Are you even listening to me?” I blinked sharply. The roar of the stadium vanished. The track disappeared. And suddenly, I was gripping the steering wheel of my SUV instead of running toward a finish line. “…Bailey?” Lola’s voice blasted through my phone speaker, sharp with irritation.

I run from everything. But I'm done running.

The function running. The western thread active. The ordinary work continuing.

"I hate the distance. I hate that I created it by being afraid. I hate that my default response to vulnerability is to run." "I know," Eli said. "I want to stop doing that," I said. "But I don't actually know how to exist any other way. I've spent so long maintaining control that the idea of just... surrendering to what I feel is terrifying." Eli stood up and moved closer to me. "I'm not asking you to surrender," he said. "I'm asking you to stay. While you figure it out. While you're scared. While you're learning. Just... stay instead of running."
