Ezra opened the door. The room beyond was smaller than the threshold room at Crescent, and somehow meaner for its restraint. The walls were pale green, and indirect light spilled from a cove around the ceiling. A narrow bench rested against one wall, too small for real sleep. A folded weighted blanket sat at one end. Behind a partial screen was a sink, with a narrow bathroom door hanging ajar beside it. On the opposite wall hung laminated visual cards. Breathe. Hands down. Sit. Listen. It’s all right.

“What makes you think I’d ever go back with you? “Sean, do I need to remind you? We’ve been divorced for a long time. We have nothing to do with each other anymore.” Sean clutched at his ears like he couldn’t bear to hear it, breathing heavily. He stepped forward, reaching for my hand. “Jane, after you left, I realized I can’t live without you! Without your presence at home, I can’t even sleep. If you don’t come back to me, then life has no meaning!”

I approached Elocin to tell her that. “Elocin,” I called her, “There are like suspicious men outside. They are all wearing black and their eyes aren’t focused on anything. They eyes are roaming around like they’re looking for something.” I said, a bit nervous for her, as I will be leaving her.

All night, everything from the past played out in my mind like a movie. The next morning. I struggled out of the bedroom with my weakened body. The door to the guest room was open. A piece of lacy lingerie lay at the foot of the bed, clearly visible. I smiled faintly and glanced at the time. It was time to bring this farce to an end.

Walking alone on a cold winter night, I'm all alone with no one I know of is in sight. People are gathered in this big area outside the city and people like myself are trying not to freeze in this cold night. As I walk along this rough path, surrounding me are people that have nowhere else to go. Tents are set up in every direction I look. The year is 2022, my 10th birthday just ended four days ago. Shouldn't this be a delightful time that I should be spending with my family but here I am not knowing if they are even still alive.

“And—” “Are you going to draw up the contract for me. Yes or no?” I asked before Dylan could launch into another speech. I knew I sounded illogical, and maybe a little crazy; giving someone I didn’t know one million dollars to pretend to be my fiancée. But I couldn’t explain how Reine made me feel. It was a weird feeling. “You know I’m going to,” he almost grumbled. “But you also know that I don’t agree with everything you do. And today is one of those times. Let me at least run a background check.”

She was preparing to deliver her final killing blow, urging the courts to make an example of me, the social degenerate. Then it happened. The giant screen behind her flickered. Without warning, the giant LCD screen behind her flickered and changed. Her tear-streaked face disappeared from the screen. A black player interface took its place. Moments later, a crystal-clear audio recording blared through the speakers, reaching every corner of the hall and every livestream. The voices in the recording belonged to two people.

Today is really an exhausting day, I want to sleep so bad right now, but I have to prepare all of the necessary stuff that we'd be using in the mission. I took my blazer off and placed it on the couch, and went upstairs to my room. I took some of my clothes and the gadgets that I'll need. I took my medical kits and placed them in a small bag. I took my other gadgets, such as an extra laptop, a smartphone with a secured line, an earpiece, and my handguns and flash grenades. We might not need it since we're going undercover at school, but it can still be risky. In a mission like this, anything can go wrong at any time, which is why we can never trust others and sometimes not even ourselves.

The color left his face. Not gradually. All at once. The particular draining of blood from skin that happened when something landed in a place the body had not finished protecting yet. His arm circles stopped. His hands went still at his sides. He looked at me with an expression that was doing several things simultaneously and containing none of them successfully. He said nothing for a long moment. The field was quiet around us. A bird somewhere. The distant sound of the equipment manager setting up the far hash markers. The particular quality of a campus not yet fully awake.

That’s the only option I have, because I think the road on the right is where these two lower beings came from.
