“Your senses are heightened now. You’re feeling the bond.” Before I could respond, another sensation hit me—this time, sound. I could hear everything. The faint rustle of leaves outside, the crackle of the candle’s flame on the table, the distant footsteps of someone walking down the hall. I could even hear the soft, rhythmic sound of Lorien’s heartbeat, steady and strong. It was overwhelming, maddening, and I clapped my hands over my ears, trying to block it all out. “It’s too much,” I whispered, squeezing my eyes shut. “I can’t… it’s too loud.”

It feels like something under my skin is trying to wake up because it's warm and tense. Then I hear it. A soft sound. Not wind. Not something living. Whatl. As I sit up, my heart beats fast, and I can hear the sound in the forest. It's deep, strong, and close. After that, someone else takes it. One more. Three sounds. Everybody is calling to the moon. As I move to the window and pull back the curtain, my hands start to shake. At the edge of the forest below, three big shapes move into the moonlight.

Ava pov The first sound Ava heard was her own breath, fragile and uneven, like a child learning to inhale for the first time. Every part of her body felt foreign her fingers trembling, her skin burning, her heartbeat echoing in a rhythm she didn’t recognize. When she opened her eyes, the world was dim, washed in shades of grey and ash. She could feel the cold biting into her bones, but under it was something else: a low vibration, a hum buried deep in the air, too faint for the ear but clear in her blood.

As he stood there before going back to his car, he heard a strange sound. The sound was nothing like he had ever heard. It seemed almost quiet and loud at the same time. He looked around to see where it could be coming from, but saw nothing. He looked around, thinking it might be something with the storm, but there was nothing but the clouds and rain. He started to move toward his car when he became dizzy, forcing him to stop where he was. As he stood there, it felt like the sound was getting louder. He began moving toward his car again, making it into the driver’s seat this time.

The pain in my hand has settled into a deep, dull roar, like a train moving through a tunnel. I blink, trying to clear the fog from my brain. I feel weak. Hollowed out. And then I hear it. 'Scritch.' The sound is tiny. Soft. Like dry leaves blowing across pavement. I freeze. My breath locks in my throat. 'Scritch. Scratch.'

He raises his voice and slowly turns his head to face me, his eyes turning dark. "Sorry. You don't need to be ma..." A tiny shrill whistle suddenly erupts in the room. The sound slowly gets louder. The door opens and the teacher walks into the room. He begins the lesson but I can’t seem to focus, the sound feels like it’s piercing through my skull. I look around and everyone seems unfazed by the sound as it gets louder. Am I the only one hearing this? I look to West but he has a distant look on his face, his eyes still dark. Is he doing this?

I pressed my back to the wood and I listened and I tried to understand what was happening from the sound of it. Shouting first, the specific shouting of people announcing themselves, positions and warnings delivered in the clipped efficient shorthand of people who communicated this way regularly. Then running on the sand, the heavy sound of it, multiple sets of feet moving with purpose. Then something that was not a sound I had heard in real life before, only in films, and in films it never sounded like this, it never sounded this close and this flat and this final. Lake had gotten his super hearing. “Lake, hey! Hey, it’s your hearing. I know it hurts, but just breathe, okay? Look at me!” But Lake couldn’t look at him. His eyes were shut tight and his breath came in rapid, panicked bursts. Everything was too loud, with Reed's heart beating so fast that it sounded like drums exploding beside him. His own pulse sounded like a war march in his ears, and he could hear the flutter of feathers as a bird flew across a branch far behind them. He could hear the crunch of leaves under distant shoes, a bee flying by, and the wind blowing against grass blades.

But as he focused harder, the sound became clearer. The distinct crunch of heavy footsteps, slow but deliberate, moving closer. His breath caught in his throat. What was that? Rina, noticing his tense posture, glanced at him. “What’s going on?” she asked, her voice low and alert. “I hear something,” Alex said, his words shaky. The others paused, looking at him. "What do you hear?" Maya asked, clearly unconvinced. “I’m not sure. Something... moving,” Alex muttered, straining to listen. But it was subtle, a low sound that seemed to echo through the very stone. His heart raced, pounding harder as the noise came closer.

Lyca got out of the water while putting her hands over her ears. "What's going on with me? What's making all that noise?" She said it in a whisper. The noise Lyca hears gets louder as time goes on. Her heartbeat and fast breathing are also giving her a terrible headache.
