It was late. The house was quiet, save for the soft rustling of the wind outside. I moved through the dark corridors, my steps silent on the cold stone floor. I knew where Emilio would be. He was always in the garden at this time, alone, staring at the stars, pretending he didn’t know the danger lurking around him.
I stepped outside and saw him standing there, his back to me, his face lifted to the sky. He looked peaceful, so innocent. Too innocent. But that innocence wasn’t enough. It couldn’t protect him from what was coming.
