The Nevertheless Romane & Geschichten

The big twist in 'Nevertheless'? It's honestly a bit of a classic bait-and-switch on the romance genre setup. For the first half, you're fully invested in this will-they-won't-they dynamic between the two leads, with all the push and pull. Then, just when it seems like they're finally going to sync up and commit, the narrative pulls the rug out. It turns out one of them has been carrying this massive, unresolved emotional burden from a past relationship that they never properly dealt with. The conflict isn't really about whether they like each other; it's about whether they're emotionally available enough to sustain a healthy relationship. It reframes all their previous hot-and-cold behavior as symptoms of a deeper personal issue, not just game-playing.

The real impact for me was how it shifted my reading from a surface-level romantic drama to a character study about emotional maturity. The twist isn't a hidden villain or a secret identity—it's a revelation of internal damage. It makes the second half much more about self-work than about couple goals, which I found unexpectedly grounding, even if it wasn't the pure, escapist romance I initially signed up for.

I’m about halfway through 'Nevertheless' and I keep going back and forth on who the real protagonist is. The story shifts between Jae-eon and Na-bi so much, but honestly, I think the central perspective is Na-bi’s. We spend more time in her head, wrestling with her attraction to Jae-eon’s flirty, non-committal vibe versus what she actually wants. It’s her confusion and growth that drive the narrative forward.

Jae-eon is obviously a huge presence, but he feels more like a force of nature—or a problem—that Na-bi has to navigate. The whole ‘nevertheless’ theme seems to hinge on her internal conflict: knowing this situationship might be bad for her, but going for it anyway. If the book has a main character, it’s her journey through that messy, relatable push-and-pull.

The reading order for this series is a little less straightforward than most, which seems to cause a lot of confusion. You definitely start with the main novel, 'Nevertheless'. After that, there's often a debate. I'd go with the direct sequel, 'Nevertheless: Aftermath', before diving into the prequel 'Nevertheless: Prelude'. The prequel adds a lot of context that hits harder if you already know where the characters end up.

There's also a companion collection of short stories, 'Nevertheless: Interludes', which you can really slot in anywhere after the first book. I scattered them in between the bigger entries on a second read-through, and it enriched the experience, but reading them as a final 'epilogue' works fine too. The publishing order is a mess because 'Prelude' came out last, but narrative-wise, this order makes the emotional beats land correctly.

Just skip the so-called 'side story' fan compilation unless you're a completionist. It's not by the original author and feels off-tonally.
