Welcome.” I shook his hand, surprised by the genuine warmth. “Thank you. Though I’m not sure ‘welcome’ is the right word when your warriors detained me at the border.” Ryker laughed. “Fair point. They were just following protocol. Unknown wolf entering our territory, they had to bring you in. But you’re not in trouble.” He gestured for me to sit. “Actually, you’re probably the most anticipated guest we’ve ever had.”

And two more thralls waiting inside. "Would you like refreshment?" the first thrall asks. "Blood-wine? Regular wine? Water?" "Water's fine." She nods and leaves. I'm alone with the two thralls in the room. The first one is male. Maybe twenty-five. He's sitting in the corner with perfect posture. Eyes down. Waiting to serve. He's been a thrall long enough that he's forgotten what it's like to be human. The second one is female. Younger. Maybe twenty. She's got the look of someone still fighting mentally. Still remembering what freedom felt like. Still hating what she's become.

You wanna join us?” Some people had no problem joining a stranger’s table, and not all of them simply wanted to get some free food. They might just like making friends. Javier was certainly not averse to such people, so he placed another set of utensils on an empty seat. “Your friend’s welcome to join us,” he said. Hearing the okay from Javier massively inflated Luca’s sense of being seen. He quickly sent the address to his friend. “The name’s Thorin Gerard. His family is into coal mining in Westmount, but he’s been making his mark in Medb in the past few years.”

She sighs, “But I invited you to lunch.” I chuckle, “And I know the food here is good. You can still pay if you want.” I wink. Audrey laughs, “Sure, Terry. You pick the food and I pay.” Her laugh is contagious, and I can’t help but stare at her for a moment until I switch lanes. “What’s the diner called?” she asks. “It’s called Gloria's diner. It has breakfast, lunch, and dinner items on the menu. It’s my favorite because no matter what time of day it is, you can always get something you crave.”
