I unlock the door as quietly as I can. Jonah’s asleep on the couch. He’s too big for it now—his legs hang off the edge, one arm thrown over his face and the other holding onto his inhaler—but he’s curled up under the blanket I bought him last Christmas. His sketchbook’s on the floor next to him, open to a page covered in dark, jagged lines. I kneel down. Look at the drawing. Monsters again. Always monsters. Foreign and barbaric words made of dark smoke floated out of the canvas until a summoning circle was created. In the middle was a closed eye circumscribed by an inverted triangle. Gugu’s hand was sucked by a black hole projected by the canvas. Her fingers up to her wrist on the other side turned into a black shadow just like Mark’s appearance in the valley of the dead.

Brandon looked at the image stylized on the brittle and yellow parchment in shock. In the center of the sheet, was the Ghoul or a blocked and inked panting of it. All of the limbs were stokes of circles and blocks and in the painting its teeth were overly dramatized, its ears pulled back, and its limbs far too long and painted pitch black, but beyond all of this the essence of the picture was of a Ghoul.

I had no choice, so I dug through every gift Zoe had ever given me, but I found nothing. Just when I was about to give up, I shook a pillow, and a tiny paper figure floated out. Its face was drawn to resemble Lucas, and his birth details were written on the back! The fortune teller exclaimed, “That’s it! Hunter had utilized three A3 papers to complete the drawing. Grayson laid the drawing on the table and studied it carefully. After a while, Hunter asked, "Mr. Grayson, are you asking me to draw these for Ms. Belle?" Grayson had given Hunter a vague answer the last time he asked the same question. However, this time, he gave a definite answer, nodding his head. "That's right." "That's what I've suspected. They were all pretty convincing. A big spiral-bound notebook made of drawing paper lay on the chair. I flipped through a few pages. Some had charcoal drawings made with angry looking strokes. Dark and rough, but still recognizable as fields and hills you’d find around here. Other pages had diagrams in pen with clusters of spidery notes. Prop guillotines and coffins with spring-loaded lids. But most of the pages had monsters. Some drawn, some cut from movie magazines and pasted in. Some were more Polaroids of James in makeup; others were ordinary pictures of people from advertisements or news stories. On those he’d painted open-throat wounds or gouged out eyes with pen.
