Aria's POV The aquarium smelled of salt water and the particular contained wildness of living things kept in glass, and Zane walked into it like someone arriving somewhere they had been heading for a long time without knowing it. Then repeat. "Well, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in." I froze, the plate in hand hovering over the table. Zane stood in the doorway, his bulky arms crossed, a smirk on his face that I always wished I could wipe off. He was a huge one, easily 6'4, with the kind of muscles that came from months and years of dedicated training. Dark hair, darker eyes "Zane," I acknowledged quietly, setting down the plate. "Is that all you have to say?" He pushed off the doorframe and confidently sauntered into the room. "After you humiliated Eleora today?"

Bag after bag of plasma was pumped into my veins. One raw, guttural scream tore out of me, and then the sound of a baby crying filled the room. On my phone, the screen was still frozen on one last image. Jasper and Fiona were locked in a kiss beneath the Aurelian Tower. I held my crying son and let the tears fall without stopping.

Splashing the cold water on my body, I pull my head under the spray, letting the cold water splash on my skin, I need to get my hormones moving, they need to work if I want to survive leaving the house without a hot mountain man down my trail. As I feel my arms wrapped around my waist, I panic, opening my eyes. I see Zane, his body naked and he joins me in the spray of water. "You weren't in bed when I woke up. I hate that," he complains. I try hard to regulate my breath, it works, or so I thought, but then, Zane's nose nozzles the side of my neck. I like it, it makes me feel alive, I want more of that.

I set the oxygen tank by the rail and dropped into the cushioned bench that curved around the back of the yacht. A long breath rushed out of me. Not steady yet, but enough to keep me alive. Zane surfaced seconds later, cutting through the water with an athletic precision that made me want to scream from pure frustration. Did the man not have a single flaw? Oh right. He was allergic to peanuts. He climbed aboard in one smooth motion, rocking the small yacht for a beat before steadying himself. His hair clung wet to his forehead and nape, water dripping from a jawline sharp enough to slice stone. He didn’t even look cold.

Zane roared at him as he grabbed Richard by his collar. “Zane!” I exclaimed and tried to pull him away from killing the old man. I am sure one punch and the old man would be seeing the stars but before that happens I pulled Zane by his arm anxiously and he turned to look at me with disgust in his ocean blue eyes.

I slumped against the mirror, chest heaving like I'd sprinted a marathon. "Your stamina's garbage," he said, barely breathing hard. "You fold after twenty minutes." "Maybe because I'm not a robot?" "You're half-wolf. Start performing like one." I gave him the finger. He pretended not to notice. I was halfway through my water bottle when the door swung open. Zane walked in holding a container. "Brought you something," he said. Alerion's expression hardened. "We're busy." "She needs energy unless you want her dead, which means you hate her.” Zane crossed straight to me, popping the lid. "Here."

Maya’s POV “You’re trembling again.” The door creaked open, and Zane stepped inside as if he already owned the air in the room. His eyes flicked to my shaking hands resting on the table near the blinking tracker. I pulled my hand away quickly. He noticed. Of course he noticed. He shut the door quietly, the sound too soft for how loud it felt in my chest. “You didn’t drink the water,” he said. “I’m not thirsty.” He walked closer, the faint scent of expensive cologne drifting ahead of him—sweet, cold, heavy. “You should drink something.”

If Zane and his team were discovered, the Firewalls would have to catch the terror of drowning. I stood beside Elias. I watched Zane tie a heavy iron chisel to his belt. He did not look like a Chosen’s partner. He did not look like a diplomat. He looked exactly like the boy who had survived the Thornback woods by learning how to disappear into the shadows. "The water is freezing," I said quietly, the ocean wind tearing the words from my mouth. "I've been cold before," Zane said. He didn't kiss me. We didn't do grand, tragic farewells. That was for stories that ended.
