Bab 1

The rain began at exactly 8:17 p.m.

Years later, Vanessa Williams would remember that detail more clearly than her own birthday.

She was ten years old, sitting cross-legged on the living room floor of their small Atlanta home, helping her younger sister Brianna with a school project. The television played softly in the background while their mother and father were on their way home from a business dinner.

"Do you think Mommy will bring us dessert?" Brianna asked, gluing pieces of colored paper together.

Vanessa laughed.

"She always does."

The sisters exchanged smiles. Their parents never returned from a trip without bringing them something.

Outside, thunder rumbled across the sky.

A few miles away, their parents' SUV sped through the storm.

Then everything changed.

---

At first, it was only a phone call.

A call that their grandmother, Margaret Williams, would later describe as the most terrifying moment of her life.

Margaret had been reading a book in her apartment when her phone rang.

Unknown Number.

She almost ignored it.

Almost.

"Hello?" she answered.

There was silence.

Then a shaky voice spoke.

"Ma'am... are you related to Michael and Sarah Williams?"

Margaret's heart stopped.

"Yes."

The next few words shattered her world.

"There has been an accident."

The book slipped from her hands.

"No..."

"I'm sorry. You need to come to Grady Memorial Hospital immediately."

Margaret didn't remember hanging up.

She only remembered praying.

Praying harder than she had ever prayed before.

---

Two hours later, Vanessa woke up to loud knocking.

She rubbed her eyes.

The house was dark.

Brianna was asleep beside her on the couch.

The knocking continued.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Vanessa opened the door.

Standing outside was Grandma Margaret.

She looked different.

Her eyes were red.

Her hands trembled.

And for the first time in Vanessa's life, her grandmother looked afraid.

"Grandma?"

Margaret forced a smile.

"Come here, baby."

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Vanessa felt it instantly.

"Where's Mom and Dad?"

Margaret didn't answer.

Instead, she pulled both girls into a tight embrace.

The kind of embrace people give when they're trying to stop someone from falling apart.

"Grandma?" Brianna whispered.

Margaret's lips trembled.

Then tears spilled down her face.

And Vanessa knew.

Before a single word was spoken, she knew.

"No..." she whispered.

"Grandma..."

"No."

Margaret's voice broke.

"There was an accident."

The room became silent.

A silence so heavy it felt impossible to breathe.

Vanessa stared.

Brianna stared.

Neither girl understood.

Not fully.

Not yet.

"Are they hurt?" Brianna asked.

Margaret closed her eyes.

The answer took forever.

"They're gone."

Gone.

One small word.

One word powerful enough to destroy an entire childhood.

Brianna blinked.

"What do you mean gone?"

Margaret began crying openly.

Vanessa felt the floor disappear beneath her.

"No."

"Vanessa—"

"No!"

The scream exploded from her chest.

"No! No! No!"

She grabbed her grandmother's arms.

"They promised they'd come home!"

"They promised!"

"They promised!"

Her voice cracked.

Margaret could only hold her as she cried.

For the first time since losing her own daughter, Margaret felt completely helpless.

---

The funeral was held five days later.

Hundreds attended.

Friends.

Family.

Business associates.

Neighbors.

Everyone came to pay their respects.

The church overflowed with grief.

But nothing shocked Vanessa more than what she overheard.

Two women sitting behind her whispered quietly.

"The accident was terrible."

"I heard the truck crossed into their lane."

"They said Michael didn't survive the impact."

The second woman lowered her voice.

"They said his injuries were so severe that the funeral home had to do extensive restoration work."

Vanessa didn't understand every detail.

But she understood enough.

Her father had died instantly.

The realization hit her like another loss.

The strong man who carried her on his shoulders.

The man who taught her how to ride a bicycle.

Gone.

Forever.

Beside her, Brianna squeezed her hand.

Vanessa squeezed back.

At that moment, neither sister knew they were making a silent promise.

A promise stronger than words.

A promise stronger than blood.

They only had each other now.

---

After the funeral, Margaret took the girls home with her.

Her modest house became their sanctuary.

Their safe place.

Their new beginning.

Life wasn't easy.

There were nights when Brianna cried herself to sleep.

Nights when Vanessa secretly stared at family photographs.

Nights when Margaret sat alone in the kitchen, mourning her daughter.

But somehow they survived.

Together.

One evening, several months later, Margaret gathered the girls in the living room.

"You two are all the family you've got left," she said softly.

The sisters looked at each other.

"You'll face hardships."

"You'll face temptations."

"You'll face people who try to divide you."

Margaret's eyes filled with emotion.

"But promise me one thing."

Vanessa nodded.

Brianna nodded.

"Anything."

Margaret smiled sadly.

"Never let money, power, or pride come between you."

The sisters immediately joined hands.

"We promise," Vanessa said.

"We promise," Brianna echoed.

Margaret hugged them tightly.

For the first time in months, hope returned to her heart.

She believed the girls would always protect each other.

She believed their bond would survive anything.

She was wrong.

Because twenty years later, the same sisters who swore eternal loyalty would stand on opposite sides of a courtroom, fighting over a fortune worth millions.

And before the battle was over, one of them would commit a betrayal so devastating that it would destroy everything their grandmother had spent a lifetime building.

The war between the Williams sisters had not begun yet.

But fate had already set it in motion.

And neither of them saw it coming.
