Lihat lebih banyakI was already late.
Not by much — four minutes, which in the grand scheme of disasters currently making up my life barely registered — but four minutes late to the most important job interview of my life felt like the universe sending a message. I took the stairs instead of waiting for the elevator, nearly twisted my ankle on the second landing, and arrived at the thirty-fourth floor of the Laurent Group building breathing like I'd run a marathon in heels.
Which, technically, I had.
"Claire Whitfield," I told the receptionist, smoothing my blazer with one hand and tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear with the other. "I have a ten o'clock. I know, I know — I'm four minutes—"
"Go straight through," she said, already reaching for the phone. "He's been expecting you."
He's been expecting you. Not he's ready for you or I'll let him know you're here. Already a power move and I hadn't even seen the man yet.
I adjusted the strap of my bag — overstuffed, as always, because I was a single mother of an almost-three-year-old and my handbag had long since stopped being a fashion accessory and become a survival kit — and walked toward the double doors at the end of the corridor.
I needed this job. That wasn't a preference or a desire. It was a fact, cold and simple, the way the most urgent truths always were. Three months behind on rent. Theo's nursery fees due Friday. My car insurance lapsed last week and I hadn't told Margaux because she would worry and I was so tired of people worrying about me.
Laurent Group was paying three times what my last job had paid. I had spent two nights preparing for this interview. I was not going to let four minutes undo any of it.
I pushed the door open and walked in.
The office was enormous — floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Paris skyline, the Eiffel Tower visible in the distance like something out of a postcard, morning light pouring across a desk that probably cost more than my entire apartment. Everything in the room was deliberate. Expensive. Still.
The man behind the desk was not looking at me.
He was reading something, pen in hand, jacket off, white shirt rolled to the elbows in the manner of someone who had been working since before the city woke up. Dark hair. Sharp jaw. The kind of physical presence that filled a room even when it wasn't trying to.
Something moved in the back of my mind. A flicker. The way a half-remembered dream surfaces without warning in the middle of an ordinary day.
"Mr. Laurent," I said, keeping my voice steady. "I'm Claire Whitfield. I apologise for—"
He looked up.
The world stopped.
I felt it happen — that specific, full-body stillness that comes before shock, the half-second where the brain receives information it cannot immediately process. My lungs forgot their job. My carefully prepared opening line dissolved completely.
Because I knew this face.
Not from a photograph. Not from the company website I'd studied last night, because I hadn't thought to study it — I'd only read about the company, the role, the salary, never once thinking to look up the man whose name was on the building.
I knew this face from a hotel bar three years ago. From low lighting and a single glass of wine that became three. From a voice that had said my name in the dark like it was something worth saying carefully.
From a morning I had run from before he woke up, because I was twenty-five and grief-hollowed and terrified of wanting something good.
Alexandre Laurent.
That was his name. His full name, which I had never known, because we had only ever been Alexandre and Claire for one single night — and then nothing, because I had made sure of it.
He was completely still behind the desk. Those grey-blue eyes — eyes I had spent three years trying to forget, eyes that lived in miniature on my son's face every single day — were fixed on me with an expression I couldn't read. Not surprise. Something past surprise. Something that had already moved through shock and come out the other side as something quieter and far more dangerous.
"Claire." Not Miss Whitfield. Not an interview greeting. Just my name, in that same low voice, like no time had passed at all.
I should have said something. Should have done something professional and composed that acknowledged the situation without detonating it. Instead I took one step backward and my bag — my overstuffed, disorganised, single-mother survival kit of a bag — caught the edge of the chair beside me.
It tipped.
Everything happened in slow motion the way disasters always do. The bag hit the floor. The contents scattered — my wallet, Theo's spare dummy, a crumpled nursery permission slip, a tube of sudocrem, and at the very end, sliding across the polished floor with the calm inevitability of something that had been waiting its entire existence for this exact moment—
A photograph.
Four inches by six. Printed at the pharmacy on the corner of my street three months ago because Theo had looked so unbearably beautiful that afternoon in the park that I'd needed something physical to hold.
It slid across the floor and stopped at the base of his desk.
I couldn't move.
Alexandre Laurent looked down at it. Then he reached forward, slowly, and picked it up.
I watched his face as he looked at it. Watched the exact moment his eyes found what I already knew was there — what had been there since the day Theo was born and I had looked into my son's face and felt the specific terror of seeing someone else entirely looking back at me.
The grey-blue eyes. The sharp jaw already forming in miniature on a two-year-old's face. The slight furrow of the brow that Theo did when he was concentrating — the same furrow I was watching happen right now on his father's face.
Alexandre looked up from the photograph.
The air in the room had changed completely. It had weight now. Temperature. The kind of atmosphere that exists in the seconds before lightning strikes.
"Sit down," he said. Quiet. Absolute.
"I can explain—"
"Sit. Down. Claire."
I sat.
He placed the photograph on the desk between us, face up, and pressed two fingers against it as if anchoring it there. As if it might disappear if he didn't hold it in place. His jaw was tight. Every line of him was controlled in the way that things are controlled when the alternative is something that cannot happen in a professional setting.
The silence lasted exactly long enough to be unbearable.
"How old," he said.
Not who is this — because he already knew. We both knew he already knew. The question was the one that mattered. The one that would tell him exactly how long.
My mouth was dry. "Two," I said. "He's — he'll be three in four months."
Something moved across his face. Mathematics. The specific arithmetic of a man counting backward through three years of his own life, landing on a single night, and understanding what it meant.
He looked back at the photograph. At Theo's laugh captured mid-moment, head thrown back, eyes — his eyes — bright and crinkled at the corners.
When he looked up again his expression had settled into something I recognized from that night — the thing underneath all the composure, the thing that came out when he stopped managing himself. It was not cold. It was not angry.
It was devastated.
"Who is the father," he said. Barely a question. More like a door opening slowly onto something he already knew was on the other side.
I opened my mouth.
Closed it.
The truth sat in my chest like a stone — three years old, heavy, and sharp at every edge. I had carried it alone through a pregnancy and a birth and two years, eight months of raising a boy who looked more like his father every single day. I had told myself I couldn't find him. I had told myself it was fine. I had told myself a hundred things in the dark at three in the morning when Theo cried and I was exhausted to my bones and there was no one else in the apartment to help.
And now he was sitting across from me with my son's photograph under his fingertips and I had nowhere left to go.
"Answer me." His voice was low and very still. "Is he mine?"
The silence between us was the loudest thing I had ever heard.
