**Amara's POV** Thursday. Volume two arrived. Not by courier. Adrian had collected it from the bookshop on Walnut Street in the morning before the school run. He had placed it on the bedside table beside volume one. Noah had seen it when he woke up. He had not said anything. He had looked at it. He had looked at the ammonite. He had looked at the two volumes side by side. He had nodded. He had gone to breakfast. At the kitchen table he had said, with the focused efficiency of someone reporting a completed inventory:

Each page was written in the ancient script in Dragon Language. "Can you read it?" asked Astrid curiously. "Yes, I can read it. But it looks like we can't linger here. We gotta get out of here. The library is almost closed according to my estimation," Draco whispered. Astrid patted her forehead. "Ah, you are right. We can be locked in this room. We need to get out of the library before the clerk looks for us and finds us here. Come on, let's go out," said Astrid.

His hunger is slowly settling, but I think it’s mostly due to him drinking Thea’s blood instead of Hunter’s. I chose three books: a literary novel about a woman reinventing herself after divorce, a poetry collection, and a thick fantasy epic I'd been meaning to read for years. Adrian bought them without looking at the prices, along with a novel for himself—something dark and literary that I made a mental note to ask him about later. "Next stop," he said as we left the bookstore, "requires trust." "Why does that sound ominous?" "Because you're smart." He grinned. "Come on."
