Clara unconsciously clapped her palms against her lips, shocked and terrified for Monalisa as she saw her desperation to kill herself. “Stop it Monalisa, this isn’t working,” Clara cried out, gesturing for her to stop as her wounds kept closing up after she stabbed herself. “No Clara, I cannot live like this,” Monalisa cried, still stabbing herself even though it wasn’t working. “Stop it Monalisa, it's not working, can’t you see, killing yourself is not working,” Clara cried, gesturing with her hands for her to see how her wounds still closed up even after she stabbed herself.

Ismail takes me by the elbow and leads me to our table. We are an hour into the Gala speeches. I am so bored and sleepy because they are speaking French and I don’t understand a single thing. I’m lucky I can’t sleep in public, or I would have nodded off by now. “Umit,” Ismail whispers. He is sitting opposite me. “Yes. I am not sleeping.” “I know. I wanted to ask if you want to leave.” “Gladly.” I pick up my clutch and walk out, not even thinking twice about it.

“You’re not allowed to be sick without style.” Sophia laughed, shaking her head. And just like that, the room changed. The weight lifted. Not gone. But shared. They sprawled across the chairs, the couch, the floor. Mira turned on music — something upbeat, ridiculous. Zara started singing off-key on purpose. Claire read aloud from the novel in a dramatic Shakespearean voice: “To be, or not to be… that is the question… whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous junk food…”

“There has been some minor chatter. Not public. Not in major media. But enough to make the buyer ask questions. Your name, Mr. Romano’s, and Mr. Montgomery’s have started being mentioned in a context that is... unclear.” Nothing fell. No door slammed. No glass shattered. Still, the room changed. Like someone had opened a small window and let dirty air in. I looked at Claire. Then Henri. Then Matteo, who still had not touched his water. “Unclear,” I said. “What does that mean? People in Monaco ran out of hobbies and started reading car movements?”

“I’ll learn.” I laughed softly in spite of myself, and for one brief second, the tension eased. We moved deeper into the maze of narrow halls and cheap set pieces, brushing past hanging strips of black plastic and badly painted gravestones propped against the walls. Speakers hidden somewhere overhead played distorted whispers and low moaning sounds. Every few corners, some actor in smeared makeup lunged out just enough to startle people without actually risking a punch. Clair shrieked exactly once, then denied it immediately.

Chapter 3 Clara’s POV. The game kept rolling like a filthy freight train with no brakes, the circle getting sloppier and louder with every turn as clothes started coming off in messy piles and hands disappeared between thighs, fingers plunging deep into soaked cunts with loud wet squelching noises that mixed with the heavy bass thumping through the walls.
