The door swung shut behind me with a hollow finality, the echo following me as I rushed forward, sneakers smacking against the long cement driveway. The sound pounded in my ears, loud enough to drown out the softer noises—the whisper of grass as the evening breeze combed through it, the faint chirp of birds somewhere in the trees. I stuck my finger in my ear and shook it, trying to get it out but after a few moments, it was gone. I took in a deep breath and began to concentrate again, but it wasn't long until that pestering noise returned. I tried to ignore it but eventually, it became too distracting. I let out an aggravated groan and went on a mission to track it down. The closer I got, the more abhorrent the noise became. An uncontrollable shudder crept up my spine the same way as when someone scraped their nails against a rough surface. I shook my head and shoulders as the sound grew louder and realized it was man-made. It was an instrument of some sort, but it was so god awful it was hard to tell what kind.

I close my eyes and allow myself to relax, and I hope that the pain will ease soon. Bzzzz Bzzzz, I hear the noise but turn around, feeling lightheaded.
