I said. He paused. Just for a second. Then “Why?” That one word felt heavier than everything else. I looked at him, my chest tightening slightly. Because I knew what he was asking, and I knew what he wanted me to say. But I couldn’t. Not yet. “It just does,” I said again. He exhaled softly, shaking his head. “That’s not enough.” “It’s what I have.” A brief silence. Then he stepped back slightly. “You could have just said you missed me.”

I eyed him, “how can I help you then?” If he thinks he could just show up at my house at such a late hour, and I will be welcoming, then he is deeply mistaking. “I missed you.” He whispered. Not now, heart. Not now. “You missed me?” I questioned in unbelief. “Yes,” he answered.

I just want to know if you're sleeping and eating well,' he said, and my heart sank even further. It was frustrating. Why wouldn't he at least do or say something to make me hate him? 'I'm doing alright. You don't have to worry,' I said, swallowing past the lump in my throat. 'It's going to sound out of place for me to say this. But, I miss you,' he stated, and I bit my lower lip, angry tears clouding my eyes. I couldn't stand it anymore. Truth was, I missed him too. I missed his presence and his kind gestures. Why does it sting so much?

I asked him "I'm doing great" He replied "Ohh, I was, uh, I was hoping you would at least lie to me" I said to him “Why?" He asked surprised “Oh...Tell me that you were missing me" I said to him “But we don't lie to each other, right?" I added "Right" He replied confused "Ever" I said "Ever" He replied "I got to get back to my friend, she's having a really hard time and she needs me" I said to him

“I wasn’t staying away because I didn’t care.” I looked at him. “I know.” “I was told…” “I know.” “I believed lies.” “I know.” “But none of that changes the fact that you weren’t there.” His face filled with pain. “It doesn’t.” I waited for him to explain. Instead, he surprised me. He didn’t defend himself. He didn’t blame anyone. He simply nodded. “You’re right.” I frowned. “What?” “You’re right.” He swallowed hard. “I missed those moments. I wasn’t there.”

“I’m going to get you out of there. I promise.” My eyes watered as I gave a slight nod, not that he could see me. “Just stay strong for me a little while longer.” I was too emotional to speak. “Baby?” I didn’t tell him how miserable I was. I didn’t tell him what Maddox was doing to me. It was best to say nothing at all. “I miss you…” After a painful sigh, he said, “I miss you too.” I had been so excited to talk to him, but once I had him on the phone, I didn’t know what to say.

He didn’t move or speak and for a second, fear crept in again, sharp and cruel. Then my arms tightened around him. “I missed you,” I admitted, the words slipping out before I could stop them,hide them or pretend they weren’t true. “I missed all of you… but you…” My voice broke completely this time. “I really missed you.” He let out a soft breath and then a quiet chuckle. It was not mocking or teasing, the chuckle was just… soft like something inside him had finally eased. “Damn,” he murmured under his breath. “You really know how to mess with my head.”

“Did something happen? Are you hurt?” “Nothing bad,” I said softly, resting my elbow on my knee and curling my fingers around the phone. “I just… couldn’t sleep. And I missed you. So much more than I thought I would.” He let out a long, quiet breath, and I could picture him lying in his own bed, phone pressed to his ear, the soft glow of the screen lighting his face.
