“You know, I think we’re going to be friends.” “I’d like that,” I admitted. The only real friend I had was Lisa. And lately… Lisa had been complicated. Moody. Guarded. Anne was a breath of fresh air. “I’ll give you a ride,” she said, unlocking the car. “You don’t have to—” “Oh shut up and get in the damn car,” she cut me off. I laughed, sliding into the passenger seat. “Thanks, Anne.” “No thank yous in friendship. Got it?” I gave her a playful salute. “Yes, ma’am.”

The guy… I don’t think I would be able to get anywhere with all these eulogies I am freely giving him. So back to my life… I never wanted to be seen as that weirdo or so but that was what came on me. I could remember my first best friend when I was in primary school. Angie. She is a friendly, beautiful soul that is so full of life, open-hearted, and a great friend. At first, I thought she wanted to be friends with me because she was new before she would migrate to the big and popular girls in school, but no, it was me she wanted and we became best of friends.

I just wanted to see her smile at me. But no. We had to be here—for Katy. Anne's best friend. Her rock. The ever-present third wheel who couldn't keep her place if her life depended on it. I didn't understand it. Katy didn't deserve Anne's time. Anne was being generous again—too generous. That was her only flaw.

Ann: “I’m sorry… I’m not a saint. I can’t forgive you right away just because you confessed. Please give me time to digest this.” Roommate: “I understand. Take your time.” Ann: “Thanks then, Toodles.” Ann came to meet me when they finished talking, and we went to class. During lectures, my instructor asked to see me afterward, so I dropped Ann off at her friend’s house. Guess who the friend was? The hijabi girl. Yes Ann’s best friend is the hijabi girl! Whoosh. The girl was beautiful. She still is. Thank God I never got to talk to her all those times I looked for an opportunity. Thank God she doesn’t even know me.

And you’re my BEST FRIEND! If that doesn’t scream identity, I don’t know what does,” she said fiercely. I gave her a small smile. I was her best friend—that was enough. “You never asked who told her that,” I said after a moment. She stilled, her body tensing. “No.”

He responded, trying to remain calm. “But… your friend?” He asked politely, and I nodded. “I'm sorry if I'm prying, but I've never heard you talk about any friend.” I could tell Kelvin was curious, so I filled him in. “It's okay, Kelvin. I understand your point, but you see, Anne is not just any friend.” I said with a smile, and paused for a split second. “She's my best and only friend from way back. We lost contact a few years ago, and today, we ran into each other by chance in the store’s bathroom.” I chuckled. “Funny story, right?”

"Zack, it's fine you can leave. I have Lucas and these guys,'' I didn't want to leave permanently. Plus, saying Kevin was here was not as reassuring as she thought. Eventually, I did leave. I would hate to keep her around Kayla when she clearly wasn't happy with her around. "Lucas is really nice," Kayla conversed as we walked to where I parked. "Is he? I never liked him," Kayla linked our arms which made it difficult to watch. "He's nice. That girl is your friend?" I grinned at the mention of Kiki, "My best friend, Kiara. We've known each other for years," Kayla nodded in acknowledgement, "She's pretty," "The most beautiful person I've ever met," I truthfully replied.
