As I step into the room, the scent of decay hits my nose. My nostrils flare, and the bridge of my nose wrinkles as the smell hits me. I can smell the infection, notes of mold and mildew compounded on top of one another to strengthen the scent of disease. It reminds me of how Mr. Barlow smelt before his passing. The infection isn’t of the same sort, but something similar tickles beneath my nostrils. The smell of death. She is indeed dying…

I said. “Maybe he doesn't…oh my goodness, is that blood?” Lucia asked pointing at my face. “Blood?” I asked as I raised my hand to touch my head but there was nothing there. “No, your nose,” Lucia said in panic. I raised my hand to my nostrils and panicked when I saw my hand stained with blood. I rushed into the bathroom attached to the library and went to the mirror. There was blood trickling down my nose. I watched in horror as the toilet paper I took got soiled with blood.

As soon as we arrived, I stepped out of the car and took in the gruesome sight before me. The first thing that hit me was the smell of blood. It was so pungent that it made my eyes water and my stomach churned. It was the kind of smell that invaded your senses and refused to let go. It was the smell of death, of loss, of violence. The metallic scent of blood mixed with the earthy aroma of wet soil. It was a sickening combination that made me want to retch.

I felt a tiny trickle of liquid drip down my nose and I reached out my fingers carefully to touch it. Bringing my hand up to my line of sight, I saw my fingers coated with blood. I had a nose bleed as well. I heard Rodney screaming my name alongside my Dad and that was the last straw. Seeing my own blood knocked me out of it. My eyes rolled to the back of my head as I blacked out.

This isn’t anywhere I know. But then something sharp struck her nose. A scent. Raw, heavy, impossible to ignore. Blood. Her heart skipped. She sniffed again, deeper this time. Her sharpened senses didn’t lie not anymore. It was faint but present. Beneath the herbs and firewood, she could smell blood… human blood. Humans.

I tried holding it in, but as the smell filled the room, it became unbearable. "What is wrong with me?" I thought to myself. "I need to go see a doctor soon." I dashed into the room in search of a nose mask and found one in my bag. I secured my nose with it and went back into the kitchen to finish the cooking. The nose mask didn't block the smell entirely, but it was manageable.

He said sniffling. I watched as Julian's nose flared as he smelled the blood finally. He quickly looked up and his eyes went wide. "It's not as bad as it looks baby, I'm okay." He quickly threw his hand over his mouth as he looked at me in horror. "Baby I'm okay. Seriously it's just a little bloody nose. Not my first and probably not my last." I said trying to reassure him. I've definitely had worse. "Look it already stopped bleeding." I said as I wiped it a couple more times.

The scent of blood fills the room, causing my nostrils to flare as I seek out the scent. Shoving Sabina to the side, I look around the room in search of where the scent of blood could be coming from. Sabina whimpers from behind me, drawing my attention to her direction. Blood flows from her stomach, coating her hands as she presses down on the wound that has blood flowing out of it like a river.
