Sophia whispered, her voice shaky but determined. Ethan pressed a finger to his lips, signaling for silence. He motioned for them to retreat farther into the forest. With slow, calculated steps, they began to edge backward, away from the clearing where they had foolishly let their guard down. The forest was thick, offering cover in the form of towering trees and dense foliage, but it also concealed whoever—or whatever—was lurking out there. Sophia’s heart pounded in her chest, the rhythmic thumping deafening in her ears. She gripped her gun tighter, the metal cool against her clammy skin. Every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves made her jump, her senses heightened to a razor's edge.
