NATHANIEL's POV Forty-eight hours. In the world of trauma, forty-eight hours is the difference between a rescue and a recovery. To the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, I was a grieving billionaire. To the news outlets, the story of the "Sun King’s Nurse" was a viral sensation—a tragic tale of a gold-digger who met a dark end in a foreign land. But to me, the world had ceased to exist. I sat in the back of the mobile command unit parked at the edge of the Okutama Reservoir.

She stood at the island in the kitchen that had become adjacent to hers and she looked at the man she had been accumulating for forty-nine days and she felt the answer in her chest the yes she had been carrying since the midnight kitchen, the answer that was prior to Diane Mercer and prior to the forty-eight hours and prior to every managed reason she had found for not saying it, rise to the surface with the specific quality of something that had been held too long and was now, simply, ready.

When I checked the wall clock, I realized it was a few minutes past 9 am. I yawned in fatigue and stretched my hands in the air. I had no idea how I slept for too long even when I wasn't drunk last night. I checked my phone and saw the numerous missed calls from Paul. It could only mean one thing; he's ready for our second mission.

His voice was barely audible as if he was negotiating a deal within himself, he's eyes glued to the monitor on his hands before splitting his gaze back to my face. 48 hours rang a bell but I decided to ignore it until my consigliere would spill whatever he had to say.

I corrected. We locked eyes. He caved first. “Forty-eight. Final.” I straightened, close enough that my chest nearly brushed his shoulder. “Fine. Forty-eight hours. But hear me, if one whisper leaves your mouth before then, I’ll cut your tongue out myself. Do we understand each other?” He swallowed. Nodded. Packed faster this time. The corridor outside the hall was cooler, quieter. I should have been pleased, forty-eight hours was a lifetime in the right hands, but instead I was burning.

[48 hours] “When the truth is no longer yours to guard, every second turns into a blade.” The first thing Panni noticed when she woke up was the silence. Night came, Soheila opened her eyes from cultivating. Her body feels relaxed and light. Soheila smiled and went to her bed to read the books that she had brought from the library.
