A message bubble lit up under his name, cheerful and oblivious. Just another one of his dry, stupid jokes—something about his dinner being so terrible he was convinced the restaurant was trying to assassinate him with undercooked chicken. He'd probably attached one of those ridiculous GIFs he was always finding, something animated and silly that was meant to make me laugh.

You can start there. I nod slowly. “Finally, someone who makes sense.” Me: I’ll try this. Thanks. I exit the forum, then immediately type: ‘Random fun questions to ask a friend about themselves.’ Enter. My screen floods with suggestions, lists of icebreakers, “cute couple” quizzes, whole threads about date ideas, random memes sprinkled in. I scroll. And scroll. And scroll. “Oh. That’s actually a good question. I’ll keep that.” Next scroll. “That’s funny… but if I ask it, will I sound weird?”

Humans can be dumb and annoying. “I finally kidnapped my ex,” I said. They gazed at me for a moment and immediately burst into fits of laughter. “I think you should try comedy; you are in the wrong place.” I joined them in the laughter. Indeed, people should really believe people; when they say what they say, they mean it. "Okay, what do you guys say that I moved over there and took her?” I said with a sip of vodka. "No, you can't, Jake. I think you should sit this one out. We have tried,” one of them said.

I said “And you also shut up! Haven't you heard of love at first sight? And technically, this isn't your first date with the handicapped prince!” “Be nice Ari! You don't make fun of people's predicament! “Alright, I'm sorry!” Ari said, half snickering as she held her ears the way the humans on a soap opera we watched some time ago did whenever they apologized. "Yes, to the questions I have for you! Ari, how do you randomly remember stuff?” I asked and as an image of her face looking like a baboon flashed before my eyes, I burst out into uncontrollable laughter. Ari didn't know why I was laughing, but she laughed right along with me.

"Got anything to say?" "Fuck you." I burst into laughter.

He’d slipped on dark glasses and gone quiet. “Why do men have to have such huge vehicles? I think it must be a sexual thing. ‘Look at me. Mine’s bigger and better than yours.’” She heard a choking noise. “Are you all right?” He howled in laughter. “Do you always say exactly what’s on your mind?” “It’s a bad habit of mine.” Rand chuckled again. “Thanks for the laughs. I tend to be the opposite. My family says I’m too serious.” “I’ll be happy to cheer you up anytime you need it. Just call. If I’m at work, I’ll leave a recording of jokes.”

"I knew right then she wasn't cut out for the big leagues." That was a recital when I was eight years old. It was my first time facing such a large audience, and I did get stage fright. But Rhys was the first one to rush onto the stage to comfort me back then. He told me, "Maeve, you played wonderfully. Those people just don't understand music." Now he was using it to humiliate me. Laughter echoed through the room, and my cheeks burned. He was mocking me in public, turning my past humiliation into a punchline.

“Or… Catfish.” A laugh slipped from me—real, unsteady, broken at the edges. “Yeah, that’s right. If you don’t wake up soon, I’ll start naming our baby after random animals. Catfish. Platypus. Hedgehog.” I laughed again, the sound bubbling up unexpectedly, sharp and almost hysterical in the sterile quiet. My chest shook with it, but then it broke off suddenly, and the silence that followed hit harder than before. My throat closed. My laughter died.
