He drew a symbol in the air—long strokes, looping arcs—and the magic shimmered. "Do you know what this is?" She shook her head. "It is the mark of my house. My line. My blood."

We took our place around it—Nora at the center, the rest of us forming the outer ring like the spokes of a wheel. Palms pressed to the ground, each one making contact with the sigil at the spot where our House mark had been carved: a wolf head for Hawthorne. A flame and crown for Aurelian. Bat wings for Nerezza. An open book for Everley. A tree for Bloodpine. A circle of runes for Runebound.

As such, it shone splendidly and easily caught the eye of anyone passing by. “That tree is the symbol of House Winston and a one-of-a-kind decoration of the garden. Noticing what she was looking, her dad smiled. "That is the symbol for alchemy in magick. This book is called Bnane's Book of Potions." Her dad said as he kept patting it as if the book was a little child or a favorite pet. "And only people with magick can open this book. All the special books can only be opened by the magick in our blood. Other normal books, about magick, about wiccan culture and symbols, now anyone can open it."

Sunlight poured in through the open ceiling, making the platform that overlooked the cliffside and its arcane looking circle, glitter like polished opalite. I started scouring the books that lined the shelves, pulling them with both my hands and magic, flipping through pages as my eyes darted between books. With a wave of my hand I sent a book on potion recipes and another on cursed objects back onto the shelves. A slight headache throbbed at my temples by the time I found what book I was looking for. There was no missing that strange symbol, the one Dain had showed us painted on the wall. I flipped to the beginning of the chapter and stared down at the word, ‘Illusion spells.’

"Are you in some type of cult? Henry burst out laughing; his eyes shone with mirth. "You can say so." he teased in a low voice. I had raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" Henry's smile faltered and he glanced around the garden as if to check we were well and truly alone. "It's the family symbol," he whispered. A shiver ran down my spine. "Family symbol?" I repeated, my mind running riot with possibilities. Henry nodded, his face grim. "Yeah. It's a very long story, but let's just say that's a. legacy. One to which I'm not certain I want to belong."

This followed by 2 more flags with an emblem of a flying white bird and a large black rock covered by green moss. I asked Steven about them and he explained that the flags identify the dorms for students who are pure elemental conjurers. We settled in one of the cafe’s and then he proceeded to explain things better, the dorms with the dragon flag are called House of Fire, the dorms with the swimming green turtle flag are called House of Water, the dorms with the flying white bird flag are called House of Air, and the dorms with the large black rock covered by green moss flag are called House of Earth.
