I take a deep breath and start reading, my voice changing almost instantly. "My lungs burned with each panting breath as I sprinted across the rocky slope of the mountain. My body ached with fatigue and the landscape was starting to blur, but I kept pushing myself as the voices behind me grew louder. I stumbled a bit on the rocks, but immediately got up and continued clambering over the boulders.

It would all be over soon. Then, as her vision began to fade, she heard some horrible growling from all around her . . . from the back towards the alley and from the direction of the street. She saw her attacker . . . saw him staring first in one direction and then another. He snarled and tried to locate his dropped weapon. Then a . . . dog . . . jumped on him from out of nowhere, but it was bigger than any dog Jane had ever seen. And it seemed strange. . . bipedal. Then a second such animal impacted Jane's attacker, and she heard the man in the suit begin to scream. She saw two more such animals rush past her and head towards the alley. POV: CALLIE I pushed the creaking door, which opened with a low, prolonged groan. The interior of the frozen wilderness welcomed me with a heavy, cutting air that burned my lungs with every breath. I trembled with each step, feeling the cold penetrate my bones. Intense growls echoed in the distance, threatening my determination. I kept walking, fearing the imminent confrontation with the fury of my inner wolf.

Aurora whispered to the wolf’s perked-up ears. They ventured deep into the woods. In the distance, the soft echoes of footsteps reached their ears. Aurora’s gaze sharpened as the wolf suddenly picked up its speed and spurted forward. They had spotted their target, Chloe, who was trudging clumsily through the blinding snow. Chloe looked back and let out a horrified cry. She tried to pick up her pace, but the snowfall had made it extremely difficult to move around swiftly. The wolf jumped and tackled Chloe to the ground. The wind knocked out of her as she landed hard on the snow-covered forest floor. She struggled against the wolf’s grip, but he was too strong. She was trapped.

She climbed the steps, crossed the threshold, and tried to ignore the way the wolf inside her went completely, inexplicably alert. Just adrenaline, she told herself. Just the territory. Just being back. She kept walking. End of Chapter One.
