She peered her eyes scowling at him. Then I noticed the way her eyes changed color, it was a lighter shade of brown. It had been hazel before. Witches never changed their eye color, or had two different eye colors. It was always one color. “How dare you? I will fucking rip that tongue of yours”. He took a step towards her, but I held him back, when I saw her fingers. It was in a fist, but I couldn’t miss the sharp claws that protruded from it. She tried so hard to conceal it.

His eyes were still that gold she used to think looked like sunlight. Now they looked like rot. She lifted her chin a fraction. “You touch my pup,” she whispered, deadly soft, “and I will open you like a fish.” The room went very quiet. The fae’s wings stilled. The witch’s eyes sharpened, interested now. Gunner’s nostrils flared. “No one is touching—” “Gunner,” the witch said, voice low, warning. “Mind yourself.” He snapped his mouth shut. Oh. Baylee filed that away too.

“So Rachel, you’re a witch?” Rachel dropped her salad and nodded excitedly. ‘Ugh, not this,’ Albert complained. “Thirty percent demon and seventy percent witch. It’s the reason I have violet eyes. If I were a full witch, I would’ve had blue but my demon blood gives red so that makes my eyes violet but on a blood moon, they go full red, like yours.” Jade smiled at how excited Rachel was to talk about herself, which seemed to confuse her. She probably couldn’t understand why anyone would be happy to talk about themselves and it sadly said a lot.

I began, “Gemini twins are the only species of witches whose eyes go black when they’re in control. No other witches can achieve that level of darkness. That’s what makes them the most powerful witches of all.” The room fell silent as I continued, my voice unwavering. “For werewolves, it’s different. Alphas’ eyes go red when they’re in control, while ordinary wolves have yellow eyes. But witches? Their eyes stay normal, human, because they’re not like werewolves . They’re closer to humans than wolves. Except for Gemini twins. They’re a different breed entirely. They’re the Alphas of witches.”

Sylvia summoned her witch forward. Her iris turned a light shade of green.
