I exhale. The rich, sick sensation clears after a few more moments. I open my eyes, and nothing around me has changed. Concrete, fence, weeds, wall. It’s mostly quiet out here. My cigarette has burned itself down to halfway. The fuckers put accelerants in these. The memory of a man’s voice blasts into my head, loud and clear and all at once. The fuckers. Scanning the room, I spotted Dexter, barely noticeable in his black attire and face cap. I had wanted to meet at a bar, but Dexter insisted on a coffee shop…less prying eyes from other mafia lords. Mafia lords were mostly found in a bar, not a fucking barbie coffee shop. I sat down across from him, accepting the cup of coffee offered by a blonde waitress. “How secure is this place?” I asked, feeling a little bit uncomfortable. Dexter grinned, his smile unnerving. “Half the people here aren’t regular customers. They’re armed to the teeth,” he said, sipping his coffee.

The man coughed suddenly, while blood spilled from his mouth as he bent forward, struggling to breathe. “That is,” I continued, “if you cooperate.” The man slowly lifted his head, his eyes barely open. He looked terrified. Good. Fear made people honest. “Who sent you?” I asked, my voice was calm, almost bored. The man swallowed painfully. “I’ve already told you,” he muttered weakly. “I’m just a petty thief. I saw a rich woman walking alone and thought she would be easy to rob.”
