The dark humor was so perfectly Jaxx that I couldn't help but laugh. I burst out laughing, the sound bright against the lingering tension in the room. The absurdity of his grim humor never failed to catch me off guard, to remind me that beneath the violence and the control, there was a man who made me laugh in the darkest moments. Jaxx just shrugged, completely unbothered by his own dark wit, though a small smile played at his lips, softening the hard lines of his face.

I got up, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, and looked out over the bustling city below. My reflection stared back at me in the glass—sharp and confident. In the workplace, if someone pretended to be weak, there would always be countless wolves in sheep's clothing ready to trample over them. But that was fine. It could be considered a test of people's true nature.

My smile widened as I mindlessly took off my jacket setting it down on the leather seat. I clung to Dalton chatting with him as Enzo thought it was the time for the like of the day as he called it. It was one of those stupid habits that we had going on as kids and it kinda stuck with us and Enzo was the one with the shittiest and corniest jokes. Dark. Not a soul was here except for the five of us. My mouth cracked into a smile before I broke out in laughter. It was hysterical laughter that lacked humour.
