It was like my body already knew what was coming. “Come on,” I whispered to myself. “Just stand.” I swung my legs over the side and placed my leg on the floor. The floor fely cold beneath my feet, grounding and terrifying all at once. Slowly and carefully, I pushed myself upright. For half a second, just half, I was standing. Then the world tilts. Pain flared in my knees and my legs buckled like they had been cut from under me. I hit the floor hard, the impact knocking the air out of my lungs.

I stood in the middle of the courtyard with the whole academy watching and felt the ground solid under me and my body exactly where it had decided to be. The world waited. So did I.

She's worried I'll get hurt, which I guess is valid since I can actually get hurt when I'm in one of her books. I will not get hurt though I've always caught myself before hitting the ground, so why would this time be different? I tell myself despite everything that has never happened that now happened today. Sure, it is a lot higher than I've ever done before, but I'm sure it will be fine. I leaned back as far as my boots would let me before tapping the off button with my right heel. Instantly my body fell the way I was leaning, and in a matter of seconds I was falling headfirst to the ground. Wait, what was I supposed to say? Oh yeah, please don't do this at home.

But I wasn't going to let him see it. “Okay,” he finally said. “How about we try walking?” He came closer and helped me to my feet. The moment my legs touched the ground, I froze. I looked down. My legs were standing. Actually standing. For a moment, I didn't move. I just stared at them. It was such a simple thing. Mike slowly let go of me. I remained standing. He took a few steps backward. “How about coming to me?” I looked at him. “Mike, I wasn’t born crippled.”

Staring at the body. At what I did. at what I was required to do. My hands continue to glow a little. Power is still humming. The ropes lie in pieces around my feet. I have raw wrists. bleeding. I don't sense it. My legs give out. I hit the ground hard. Knees first. Then hands. The earth is cold beneath me. Solid. Real. I'm alive. I'm alive. The thought crashes over me again and again. I'm still here. I howl and tilt my head back before I fall all the way.

He was standing outside, waiting, his sharp gaze fixed on me. "Oh… right," I stammered, fumbling with the seatbelt before stepping out in a fluster. But the moment my foot hit the ground, it slipped, and before I could react, my body lurched forward uncontrollably. "Ahh!"

He put me on the ground and I got up. I stayed down one beat longer than I needed to, face against the cold earth, breathing it in, pine needles and mud covering every part of my body. I heard water in a little distance away from me, and from where I stood, I realized that it was still going to be some distance if i was to get anywhere close to it.

Changed too much. I close my eyes for a moment, inhaling deeply. Then I open them again. “I’m ready,” I say. But even as I speak the words, I can’t shake the feeling that the ground beneath me is already starting to crack. And soon, everything will come crashing down.

Mike without having a second thought he turned back and walks away from the dangerous cliff. However, as he turns back the ground he was standing started to shake- No, it's not shaking... The whole ground is moving. (W-what!?) [Mike brace yourself!] (I'm already on it!) Taking his stance as he takes hold of his feet on the ground Mike ready himself for worse. As he readies his stance he felt weirdly comfortable in his stance. Losing in his focus he looks at his footing and sees that his stance is strong... stronger and better than his last one like there is no blind spot.

I can’t see where I’ll put my toes, but I’ll have to hope there is a place because looking will mean leaning back from the wall and I have no intention of doing that. “I don’t know,” I call back. For a second Mack is silent, then he speaks. “Adela is always going on about you being grounded. Are you?” And that’s when I realize that no, I’m not. But if I want to ensure I succeed in what already feels like an impossible task, spending a couple of minutes grounding myself is a good place to start.
