I stood there, uncertain if he wanted me to follow, so I stayed put. I fumbled with my shaking hands to retrieve my phone and struggled to click on my brother's contact name. When I finally managed it, the phone slipped from my hands and crashed onto the paved driveway. The screen was badly cracked, and I didn't even want to look at it. So I shut my eyes, leaned down, quickly picked it up, and slid it into my pocket. I groaned aloud, cursing the universe under my breath, as I looked around for anyone I might know. The chances of that were one in a million because, frankly, I had no friends. It was a sad life to live, and if only people knew how we felt on the inside.

She shrugged, “You got the body.” She remarked, “It would be an extra gift that’ll keep his jaw on the ground.” Her brow moved up, “Add some strawberries and wine. I think I’d do ya too.” Her words weren’t wrong… I smiled at her until I heard my phone ring. I sighed, looking down at the phone. More work. I pulled it up, seeing it was my manager. I put it to my ear, “Hello? Oliver, what’s up?”

Please let that have been a dream. Slowly — cautiously — she reached for her phone. Her fingers hovered above the screen. If the call log wasn’t there, she would never drink again. She unlocked it. Recent Calls. Unknown Number. 12 minutes. Her heart started beating louder. She tapped it, half expecting more. There wasn’t. No follow-up call. No messages. No missed attempts. Nothing. The absence sat heavier than anything else could have. If he was weird, wouldn’t he have texted? If he was curious, wouldn’t he have tried again?
