She shook her head, tears streaming. “Why— why would you make me see that?”
“Because you need to understand,” he hissed. “This is the world you live in now. You don’t survive here by pretending you’re innocent.”
She stared at him through blurred vision, horror and hatred warring in her chest.
“I’ll never be like you,” she whispered.
He leaned in close, his breath cold against her ear. “Everyone says that at first.”
Then he let her go, and she collapsed onto the ground. She couldn’t stop shaking — couldn’t comprehend what she’d just witnessed.
