I feel my whole body relax like it only does when she's close. "You don't need to be embarrassed about reading dirty books. I've been doing it for years." she says and my head pops up and I stare at her to determine how serious she is. But I don't sense even hint of joking. How interesting. "Really? What kind of books do you like?" I ask and watch with fascination as an adorable blush creeps up her face. "Um... mostly small town romance. Single dad, friends to lovers, next door neighbors, things like that." she says a little shyly making me chuckle.

There was a reason she read so many romance novels, and it wasn’t because it was what women did. She read them out of yearning. The books were her one way of getting a happy ending. The way the light caught in her hair and made her look like something out of a painting. Finally sensing me, she looked up with wide eyes and tried to hide her face behind the book. "No." Lowering the book, she added, "I was just reading." "What are you reading?" Showing me the cover, she revealed one of the romance novels I'd given her weeks ago. Smiling, I sat down across from her. "Any good?"

But obliging my curiosity, she tilted the cover and let me read the title. “How to lose an alien prince in 30 days?” I read out loud, frowning. “Sci-fi?” I’d pegged her as more of a murder/mystery myself. “No, romance,” she replied, never taking her eyes off the page. I tried to hide my surprise. She didn’t look like the type of woman who believed in “knights in shining armor” or “love conquers all”. She looked rational, strong, and independent. But it had me wondering what she DID believe in…

She looked down at her hands. “Maybe,” she said quietly. “But I’m not very good at believing that kind of thing.” I thought for a moment before an idea came to me. “Maybe you can try reading romance stories.” “Huh?” “Have you ever read any before?” I asked. She shook her head immediately. “No.” Her answer came so quickly that I could not help laughing slightly. “Not even one?” “No.” “Why not?” “I always thought they were unrealistic.” I smiled faintly.

She's not small. She starts giggling. "I'm huge, right?" "I wasn't going to say anything, but wow." "I've had people ask if I was sure there's only one in here," she grins. Thank goodness I didn't voice that one. "So what are you reading right now?" Olivia and I have discovered a mutual love for reading romance, which has been amazing. Having someone to talk to about books is incredible. "I started Camilla's new one but it's, hmm, I don't know. I'm just not feeling it."

There were a lot of signs, given to her by the books she read, but instead, she stopped reading anything romance and tried to close her eyes to the red flags. If only she'd listened. She shook her head briefly and turned back to Henry. "I just couldn't relate to it so much, and besides, some of the things there are too cheesy for my liking." That part was true, and it annoyed her. The fancy dates, flower gifts and looking at the stars didn't always happen in real life, so she decided to read more real stuff.

As the rain continued to patter against the window, he couldn't help but admire the way her long hair cascaded down her back like a waterfall of chocolate silk. "Your hair is so beautiful," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. She blushed, tucking a strand behind her ear. "Thank you," she replied shyly. "I've always been told it's my best feature." He couldn't help but agree, but he also couldn't tear his eyes away from the book she was reading. "What's that you're reading?" he asked, leaning closer to get a better look. "It's just a romance novel," she replied, her cheeks flushing a deeper shade of pink. "I like to escape into the stories sometimes."
