"You've disappointed me, Damien." ​Damien remained entirely silent, his jaw clenched. ​"You have one final opportunity," Victor continued, his tone conversational yet lethal. "Bring the girl to me before sunrise." ​"And if I don't?" ​"You already know the answer to that." The line went completely dead. ​Damien slipped the phone back into his pocket. "That was your boss," she stated.

"Leave him." Dante's eyes stayed locked on me. "Eleanor. Come home. My father is willing to overlook this if you return quietly. If not, he will act. You know what that means." I looked at him. And I laughed. "Dante. I told you. It's over." His face faltered. "You're throwing me away? Your own parents?" I looked at them. At him. "The person who threw me away, Dante, was all of you."

That was a sign of the system's punishment, or the beginning of the countdown until his brain shut down. "Gina…" He leaned on my shoulder weakly. His voice was barely a whisper now. "My head hurts.
